No matter what your dream, you can achieve it! Let BReaKiNG iNTo HoLLyWooD inspire you along the surreal journey of Angela M. Hutchinson. This Chicago native drove cross-country to launch her entertainment career in Los Angeles. Now as the founder of Breaking into Hollywood, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Angela helps other professionals in the entertainment industry pursue their careers with integrity, creativity and enthusiasm. Angela is a casting director, former talent agent, scriptwriter, published author, songwriter, magazine editor, entrepreneur, mentor, wife, and mother. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Angela earned her B.S.E. in Industrial & Operations Engineering. She is also a former Miss Teen Illinois Semi-Finalist. Angela has worked for MGM, Warner Bros. Television, and the Grammys. In October 2005, she was elected as the first African American president of The Scriptwriters Network, since the organization was founded in 1986. Nationwide, Angela has been a panelist at film festivals, a judge for talent showcases and a speaker within the faith-based community. Most notably, Angela was featured as an "Agent for Good" on the cover of Back Stage, one of the entertainment industry's leading publications. Inspired by the 2008 presidential elections, Angela became a more active voice in her community. In 2009, she was appointed as a Los Angeles City Official. Achieving these milestones by the age of 30 marks the passion and drive of a rising power player living out her Hollywood dream.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indeed, there are women of integrity in this business, November 9, 2010
This review is from: Breaking into Hollywood (Paperback)
A producer friend referred me to Breaking Into Hollywood (BiH the organization) some months ago, I attended the event and saw this author just briefly in passing. Though she was the President/CEO, she greeted me very politely and professionally, and we went our separate ways. I was edified by her event, and I thought very highly of BiH and the services it seeks to provide for aspiring entertainment professionals. Funny thing, in an unrelated situation, I was leaving a meeting with a writer friend and she handed me Breaking Into Hollywood the book. I thought: this just could not be a coincidence! Something was drawing me to this author and her nuggets of experience and insight.

Sure enough, it was a light easy read - perfect for my train commute. I could totally relate as someone from a completely alternate background who was hungry and passionate enough to drive clear across this country (as so many millions do) to pursue dreams. She affirmed and confirmed my talent and instincts by openly sharing about her own. I felt like I was reading a blog from a sister or cousin because the author was so down to earth and accessible. I read passages aloud to my business partner to inspire her as well. We believed that if Ms. Hutchinson could breakthrough - we could too.

A smart savvy business-woman of color who started with absolutely nothing (and when you read the book, you will know just how little she came to LA with!) and made wonderful things happen in her professional and personal life (which is virtually impossible to do in the City of Lost Angels). All this without completely compromising her look, self, or beliefs. She systematically sets goals and achieves them, and I admire her because a part of her life purpose is to encourage you to do the same.

My only critique would be that there were times when she over-simplified or amplified her circumstances. But overall when I finished this book I felt enriched, and I know others will too.

4.0 out of 5 stars How True!, April 5, 2011
This review is from: Breaking into Hollywood (Paperback)
This book is one part, "My life up 'till now." And second part, "Pay attention and do what I did to make something happen for yourself."

I appreciated the honesty. You think cliches are dead? Be a cute girl OR guy in Hollywood without being propositioned for favors! Crazy, in 2011. But hey, people will always be people.

This book isn't smarmy or gossipy, rather it shows that in the wild west you have to have your hustle on and secure mentors for yourself. If you are half as intrepid as the author you too can make it. I actually live in the land of broken dreams. Most people select themselves out of the game. Others rack up alliances and never get voted off the island. Everyone must do a self-check to determine if they have the inclination to be almost totally self-reliant and self-motivating. And deal with disappointment even when you've done everything right. One day the payoff will be huge although do know that smaller payoffs will come first.

This book is generous in offering many free resources too. Much appreciated.
