From the Inside Flap

In Breakout you’ll learn:

  • Why environmental extremists cling to the myth of “peak oil,” and how the fracking revolution is about to make America the world’s leading oil producer
  • How personalized healthcare—radically individualized treatments made possible by advances in genetics—and regenerative medicine could wipe out our most feared diseases, and why they’re on a collision course with Obamacare
  • How self-driving cars are on the verge of making traffic jams—and traffic deaths—a thing of the past, unless regulators wreck them before they leave the lot
  • Why a one-size-fits-all education will become a historical curiosity, unless the teachers’ unions and professional academicians succeed in preserving the current dysfunctional systems
  • How NASA—once the repository of American dreams of the future—became a textbook case of death by bureaucracy
Americans don’t have to settle for a shrunken future. We can escape from the prison of the past into a future of undreamed of opportunity and abundance. All we need is the courage to break out.

While Newt Gingrich believes in a bigger government and a more active Federal government than I care for, there is a lot about Mr. Gingrich to admire. Not the least of which is his unending optimism about America and the American People. The future can be something wonderful and bright, if the naysayers and those whose interests are rooted in an outmoded past will just get out of our way! There is nothing of the too ever present and weirdly popular dystopian nightmare in Mr. Gingrich's message to us.

This book shows us how close a bright and prosperous future is to our present grasp if we will just reach past the artificial barriers being thrown up to keep us locked into interests and fears that keep us from taking the necessary actions and moving ahead.

Breakouts in Mr. Gingrich's parlance are those new technologies and methods that allow for a radical change in the way we presently do things. Costs are lowered, supply is increased, wealth is increased, and people live longer with greater prosperity. He says, "Breakouts change how we live and how we think about living, how we organize activities, and how we organize government." Past Breakouts include steam power, the electric light, the automobile, flight, computers, and many medical advances that cured polio and many other infectious diseases.

Gingrich defines the actors in the Breakout Process. 1) The Breakout Pioneers - the innovators with the ideas and the technological development to make a huge change in society. But only if the Breakouts are allowed to spread and disseminate without artificial restrictions.

I seldom hear politicians so eloquently present a holistic vision that is worth of note. Newt and his cohort accomplished that in measure in Break Out. Had the concepts of this book been the mantra of the Republican Party prior to 2012, it would have pulled me deeply in the Republican base – I would have given money, time, and effort to the objectives outlined. Unfortunately the party never got this message out, perhaps as Newt says, the book is a product of defeat and lessons learned. But, if the Republicans are ever going to have a chance on reclaiming the political high ground, this is precisely the kind of vision and leadership they must display.

The discussions on oil and fracking are certainly enlightening and informative. I found it refreshing about the future of our oil dependencies and certainly agree that whatever calamity occurs in the future as a result of climate change we will adapt. I don’t agree that just because we found more oil that we can abandon research on alternative fuels. I do agree that rather than having government subsidies and incentives that are bureaucratic favoritism, prizes would be a better option.

I’m studying organizational development and specifically how to conduct “interventions” into failed institutions and organizations. One of the first things you need for that to be successful is a shared and compelling vision of the future. His assault on “prison guards” is perhaps the greatest aspect of the book. Cronyism, the corruption of power, the bias to the favored status quo, a compliant and malleable electorate, and big budget politics must end. His favoring of disruptive educational paradigms is so resonant within me as to hurt. Even now as my two kids are in college, my on-line education is proving more effective.

I was not able to put this book down once i began reading.. it really made me stop and think. The innovations that Gingrich writes about are truly remarkable and many of them I had never heard of. I will be buying copies of this book for friends on both sides of aisle. The idea that "it is not between the Left and the Right, but between the past and the future" is truly fascinating.

This book is optimistic and real. And you won’t be able to put it down, no matter your personal politics.

Newt Gingrich may have written his best book to date. I was immediately moved by the number of stories of real people, folks like you and me, who saw a need, took a risk, and overcame naysayers who said it couldn’t be done (and did something spectacular with immense meaning and incredible outcomes). Despite the serious issues America faces, Gingrich provides facts and examples of how America can continue to triumph over the challenges it faces in a compassionate and thoughtful way.

Throughout the book, the former Speaker reminds us of the need to limit the power of government. But the thought is not strident or partisan. Rather, I think it is meant to remind us that government (at any level) is not nimble and benefits those interests of the status quo either frightened by change or hostile to it because of the uncertainty in brings.

BREAKOUT continues to demonstrate the powerful vision Mr. Gingrich has for finding real solutions to America’s problems. Beyond that, it is a great read.
