Editorial Reviews

THE BREAKS is a hip-hop hilarious comedy in the tradition of Friday and Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. Mitch Mullany plays Derrick - an Irish white boy who thinks he's black - facing a day in the hood when everything goes wrong. The luck of the Irish doesn't quite seem to work in the hood. With special appearances by basketball great Gary Payton and funk legend George Clinton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Run little Gay Erkel run!, August 25, 2001

This review is from: The Breaks (DVD)
This movie is urban slapstick at it's best. Just as Friday was, The Breaks is a classic. Although it may never get the props it deserves. I hadn't even heard of this movie, and might not even know about it if I hadn't caught it on at a friends house, she told me it was "really good" so I sat and watched it. She was on point, I am so glad I got exposed to this movie. It's so funny, there were more times then I can remember in it where I was laughing out loud. It's scene after scene of stupid antics & at times gross humor. The scene with the 2 prostitutes had me dying! Mitch Malany is great in it, I think it would have been funny even if a "brother" had played the lead role. The writing is just that good, but the fact it's a white boy in the hood makes it that much better. He pulls off the white who think's he's black role with perfection. I also love how clueless he comes across. The entire cast is funny, and there is definitely chemistry between them. Renaldo Ray as Dereks (Mitch) Uncle, all I can say is wow! I can only hope there is a sequal. Well only if can follow in the steps on this one. I can't see a 2nd one possibly being better, this is one of those movies that was done right in every aspect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Shizznittle, August 21, 2002

This review is from: The Breaks (DVD)
I first saw this movie when I was in bed getting ready to fall asleep when i turned to this movie a little past 15 minutes after the start. But from then, I never stopped laughing. It was funny as hell. Then I had to see it again so I went out and rented it, but it wasn't as funny as the first time, maybe cause I wasn't tired, but no matter what, this is one of the funniest movies of all time. ONly problem is I can't find it anywhere except online. But this one will be in my DVD collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpectedly Funny!, November 27, 2002

This review is from: The Breaks [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My husband caught this on cable late one night and laughed his ... off telling about it the next day. He could barely discribe the "Kill whitey meeting" scene. It sounded so funny that I went out and rented it and I was on the floor the whole time. The only people who wouldn't like this are people who take things too seriously or people who can't get past the main character is white. I did and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I recommend it wholeheartedly. I will be a one woman ad campaign and tell all my peeps about this one. How come no one knows about this movie?
