Book Description

March 6, 2012
From Publisher's Weekly:

"Writing with business journalist Murphy, entrepreneurship expert and UC-Berkeley professor Burgstone offers a strong, comprehensive handbook for aspiring entrepreneurs who are seized with the fire of ambition but unsure where to begin. The authors detail a step-by step framework for readers to brainstorm a winning business idea, test it before they've committed too much time and money, and develop it into something great. Using examples of companies large and small (Zipcar, Parenting, Wal-Mart, Google), Burgstone and Murphy teach readers to find and fill an unmet customer need, plan for profitability, strive for sustainability, establish credibility, gather necessary resources, lead and manage effectively, and maintain balance. Their enthusiasm and energy make even complex questions about idea generation, customer acquisition, and leadership accessible; and the practical, easy to understand instruction will be invaluable to the budding entrepreneur."

What separates the world's extraordinary entrepreneurs from the millions more whose efforts fail to achieve a breakthrough?  The most important distinction is whether they have access to the proven entrepreneurial framework that the top performers use to build value and achieve their goals.  Without this kind of structure and guidance, even the brightest, most tenacious innovators most often fall short.  Now, Breakthrough Entrepreneurship closes the gap. Jon Burgstone is the founding Faculty Chair at the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at the University of California, Berkeley.  He's studied entrepreneurship for years and advised hundreds of new ventures on how to succeed.  Moreover, he practiced exceptional entrepreneurship as the co-founder and CEO of SupplierMarket, an Internet technology firm that sold for $1.1 billion in a record 362 days.  Working with business journalist Bill Murphy Jr., Burgstone has now written a book that can help just about any aspiring founder to build a great new venture. Burgstone and Murphy distill key lessons from the experiences of today's most interesting entrepreneurs-people like Peter Thiel (PayPal, Facebook), Jim Koch (Boston Beer Co.), Wendy Kopp (Teach for America), and many, many others.  You don't have to be the most knowledgeable person in the field to succeed as an entrepreneur. You don't have to be the founder with the most "advanced" ideas to come out on top.  You just need to be the best at recognizing opportunities, minimizing risk, and following through.  Breakthrough Entrepreneurship shows you how.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Aspiring Entrepreneurs, January 12, 2012
This review is from: Breakthrough Entrepreneurship (Hardcover)
As a current student and aspiring entrepreneur I have read countless books on entrepreneurship/start-ups and I can confidently say that Breakthrough Entrepreneurship stands above the rest. Similar books approach entrepreneurship by offering either a very generic how-to-guide or simply a catalogue of inspirational anecdotes. BE offers a potent blend of both, and more.

BE breaks down the entrepreneurial process into distinct, critical steps: seeking opportunity, forming a team, raising capital, creating a product/service, monetization, and on. At each step, the authors provide a two-sided deep dive. At one end they describe the importance and implementation of each step, and at the other, they offer pertinent case studies that exemplify the process. With this simple yet powerful, methodical approach to teaching entrepreneurship, BE offers concrete guidance on how to start a company as well as some perspective on how the most successful entrepreneurs have done it.

Ultimately this book is fantastic because it serves dual purposes. You can read it as a novel, inspiring and motivating you to start a venture. But more importantly, you can also utilize BE as a textbook, guiding you at each step of your own entrepreneurial journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Your Bible for Entrepreneurship, January 12, 2012
This review is from: Breakthrough Entrepreneurship (Hardcover)
"Breakthrough Entrepreneurship" was a fantastic read and was taught to me from Jon Burgstone himself at an Entrepreneurship course in UC Berkeley! From a student's perspective, this book helped me develop business acumen and brought up crucial topics worth thinking about. "Breakthrough Entrepreneurship" highlights possible pitfalls and predicaments that many beginning entrepreneurs succumb to and details how to avoid them. The book was well-written, and more importantly, easy to grasp and understand. Reading this book will ultimately set you on the right path to entrepreneurship and give you the proper tools to get started. This is your Bible for starting your own company and pursuing your dream!-- No matter what stage you are in your life, this is a MUST READ for any aspiring successful entrepreneur!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Entrpreneurship is a Must Read!!!, January 13, 2012
This review is from: Breakthrough Entrepreneurship (Hardcover)
A friend of mine recommended this book and let me tell you, I'm glad they did! Breakthrough Entrepreneurship is a must read for anyone who has ever contemplated starting a business of any kind. Whether you want to start an online store, chopped salad restaurant, or car repair business, this book takes you from the brainstorming and planning phase all the way to success. I love the fact that it's incredibly accessible while at the same time teaching complex concepts through interesting case studies. I particularly loved learning about the creative founders of Zipcar and Teach for America. Reading this book saved me thousands of dollars and years of wasted time by learning the idea I was working on for my own business wasn't quite right yet. I can't thank Burgstone and Murphy enough for this! If you are thinking about starting a business, do yourself a favor and buy this book.
