5.0 out of 5 stars Extrememly Interesting
This book sample is clearly marked that it is only the introduction and chapter one. I think it is unfair to the author for readers to rate a book as one star simply because they aren't given the whole book free. The previous comments, & reason for them, does not speak well for the quality of person using Kindle. I found the preface and Chapter one very interesting,...

1.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE: This page is designed to rip people off
I clicked on 1 click ordering from this page thinking that I'd get the free chapter for a limited time and my credit card was charged 9.99 for the whole book. I don't know who set this page up but it is designed to trick people into buying the book without realising it. Amazon should shut this page down. This page shows very very bad faith.

Very early into the first chapter it became clear to me that the subject matter is very interesting but it needs a good literary editor to fix dubious sentence structures and incorrect word use.

Beware. Even though the title for this does not indicate it this is just one chapter of the book. If a book is just a sample then it should state it is just a sample. The way this was presented (ie save $24.99) you would think it is the full book. So if you think you are getting a full book for free YOU ARE NOT. Please authors be real with your descriptions. I would have written a much better review if I have been fully aware that this was not a full book

The free e-book only includes the introduction and first chapter of the book. While I agree you get what you pay for I wish Amazon would say that in effect they are offering a sample instead of the full book as the description implies.

THIS IS JUST ONE CHAPTER OF A BOOK. When I saw it on the cover, I thought that maybe all the first pages to the chapters look like this and surely Chapter 2 etc. would follow right on. Wrong!!!! Where do we now get the rest of the chapters and by that time maybe we have lost interest? I LOVE my kindle, but this is not good enough and I was looking forward to enjoying this book! p.s. Don't say you should be happy it was free, I had to pay $2 for the pleasure of it!
Beware, is right. Kindle advertises this the same as when you buy any other kindle books with: You can read your kindle book ......
I am shocked that my beloved kindle supplier can lead me down the garden path like this. Call it a sample, not saying you save so much.

I would like to read the whole book. It was very well written, and easy for the layman, yet not so simple that my physician son might not enjoy it.

I got this book- when it was free. It is poorly written and boring. I am so happy I didn't spend any money on this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insight into the life of the first real doctor, August 1, 2011

This review is from: Breakthrough! (Free Chapter for a Limited Time): The World's First Physician: Hippocrates and the Discovery of Medicine (FT Press Science) (Kindle Edition)
This free amazon kindle offering is a single chapter from the book Breakthrough about ten of the greatest discoveries in medicine. These people reduced the suffering of millions, changed the practice of medicine, and transformed the understanding that people have of medicine.

This chapter deals with Hippocrates who was born in 460 BCE in what is now called Turkey but worked in Greece. His contributions have influenced the practice of medicine until today. He made six categories of discoveries.
1. He recognized that diseases have natural causes. Ancients and many people still today, believed that illnesses are caused by God or gods to punish people for their misdeeds. As a result people turned to priests for help.
2. He suggested that physicians focus on the patient, such as the patient's symptoms and his or her response to various treatments.
3. He developed a code of conduct for physicians that is still used in a slightly modified way today, the Hippocratic Oath.
4. He professionalized the medical practice insisting that only people trained in it should do it. Doctors should dress properly and act properly.
5. He wrote some 60 books outlying how to treat patients, although some scholars suggest that some or many of these books were composed by his students.
6. He took a holistic approach to medicine, including insistence on a proper diet, sufficient exercise, and living in an open environment with good air.

1.0 out of 5 stars Historical fallacy, April 21, 2011

This review is from: Breakthrough! (Free Chapter for a Limited Time): The World's First Physician: Hippocrates and the Discovery of Medicine (FT Press Science) (Kindle Edition)
This book is lie from the very beginning. It asserts that Hippocrates was the world's first physician....how absurd is this? As if no other civilization before him didn't have a physician...more accurately the book should be re-written and re-titled, "IMHOTEP, the World's first physician!"

I was downloading a few books I'd searched for and a few of them were free. I was very specific about what I wanted. Then I discovered this sample book on my Kindle. I am NOT interested in it, I did not intentionally download it. Is it spam? I think so. I used my USB cable to remove it. I'm a bit teed off that some entity could send something unsolicited to my Kindle. I don't think there's a way to avoid that, but I am not thrilled that it happened. I'm thinking 'could be a virus' one of these days...
