5.0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough - EVP
Breakthrough, the first major book written about the Electronic Voice Phenomena is an excellent book. It was written by an experimental psychologist from Germany, Konstantin Raudive. I was one of the first persons in the world to experiment with EVP. The book, " Breakthrough" and the book, "Carry on Talking" buy Peter Bander are both classics in the field...

3.0 out of 5 stars An EVP classic leaves me less than impressed
As many know, this book is one of the seminal texts of audio ghost hunting. As many know, this book is one of the seminal texts of audio ghost hunting. Before EVP, before mp3, and before digital recorders, there was Raudive, the Latvian scientist slaving away on his reel-to-reel machine. Raudive was an experimental scientist who brought what he assumed to be voices from the beyond to a wide audience. The first part of the book describes his procedure and provides some technical detail. Much of the book is dedicated to simply providing the content of the voices; significant really only to Raudive himself and making for fairly boring reading. Unlike the reports of today's "ghost hunters," Raudive's voices tended to come through in Latvian, German, Latin, English and sometimes a combination of many languages, all of which Raudive conveniently spoke. This can be a useful reference for the -very- serious paranormal researcher, but certainly not for the casual graveyard-tripper. And please read the book with some objectivity, as it does really feel as if Raudive is reaching at times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Order, July 11, 2010

This was a special birthday gift for a friend that has had a desire to read this book for over a couple of years. I read this book when taking a paranormal psychology course, soon after it's publication. The movie "White Noise" was based on information from this book. Requires an open mind to enjoy. This book was published in 1971 and was in excellent condition as received. Was very pleased with this purchase and how the shipping was handled. You did GREAT guys!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough - EVP, August 30, 2008

This review is from: Breakthrough (Hardcover)
Breakthrough, the first major book written about the Electronic Voice Phenomena is an excellent book. It was written by an experimental psychologist from Germany, Konstantin Raudive. I was one of the first persons in the world to experiment with EVP. The book, " Breakthrough" and the book, "Carry on Talking" buy Peter Bander are both classics in the field. Breakthrough is for those persons seriously interested in the subject of the Electronic Voice Phenomena. It is not an "entertaining" pulp fiction book. Raudive spent many years and did painstaking difficult and time consuming research in order to write this book. Keep that in mind, as it is not a "how to do it" pulp work. It was also written 30 or 40 years ago. Today, there are many persons doing EVP. One of the advantages of reading the book, is that it demonstrates that "life after death" is a reality, and that anyone who has a tape recorder and operational ears, can validate for themselves that "life after death" is a reality. Of course, those persons with rigid belief structures, will in all likelihood, reject the book and the premise. For these people, don't buy the book. You would be better off to be ignorant of the facts. Breakthrough is a great book for intelligent, open minded readers who want to read about some "hard" research into probably the greatest "Breakthrough" in the history of mankind. If you're not into EVP, and/or have a rigid belief system, don't waste your money buying the book. I personally, was one of the original researchers on EVP, and myself have made many EVP recordings. It is real. It does work. It takes time and patience. Don't expect to record loud, broadcast quality voices. Most voices received are "low amplitude whispers." Over time, with perseverance and lots of patience, you will "get voices."
