5.0 out of 5 stars No fail information for communicating with children
There is no way to fail at communicating with and understanding your children if you follow Jayne Major's course! I know I will leave a lasting legacy of love not only with my children but through them all the generations of my family that follow. Breakthrough parenting has given me new understanding and workable methods, more than any parenting book I've implemented.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you are a professional...
This book provides basic concepts in parenting that most professionals already know. It can be a useful resource to have when working with families because the basic concept is centered on communication. However, as a family therapist I have issue in the way this author has claimed ideas of CBT and developmental theory as her own without a single reference to original...

5.0 out of 5 stars Children are people too!, February 6, 2001

This review is from: Breakthrough Parenting : A Revolutionary New Way to Raise Children (Paperback)
This book is about how to "be" with your children, instead of how to just deal with their behavior. It actually recognizes that children are people too! It's the first parenting book I've seen that gives one tools on how to "be" with our children that will help them grow to be responsibile, confident, self-actualizing youth and adults. Another plus of this book is it also is as much about the parent as it is about the child. Parents can get insite about their own behavior, ways of thinking and what their needs are. After all, parents are also people!

Jayne Major's techniques in Breakthrough Parenting are nothing short of miraculous. Raising a child has been the greatest challenge in my life. I've witnessed an instant, amazing tranformation with my six-year old son I never thought possible in just a few short weeks. The skills utilized build confidence, self-esteem and a consistent structure necessary for the healthy development of a child. The power struggles are now non-existent creating a loving and peaceful home environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Parents, February 6, 2001

"Breakthrough Parenting" should be required reading for every parent and every person who is considering becoming a parent. For centuries people have thought the 'authoritarian' model of parenting was the best way of raising children. In recent years 'permissive' parenting techniques have become popular. Neither of these methods of parenting are truly effective and both can lead to developmental problems in children.

Instead, Jayne Major has provided us with a blueprint for raising children in a way that we form a partnership with them. "Breakthrough Parenting" provides practical parenting techniques for raising children so they have the tools to achieve their potential and become self-actualized adults. This book exposes corporal punishment as an obsolete and ineffective parenting tool of the past. Instead, Jayne demonstrates useful ways of disciplining children with love. This book also talks about discussing difficult subjects with children and as well as provides different tools for effective communication.

This is the best book on parenting that I have ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best gift I ever bought my kids, February 1, 2001
This review is from: Breakthrough Parenting : A Revolutionary New Way to Raise Children (Paperback)
I thought I was a great parent, teacher, and boss. But the truth is: my eighteen year old hated me, and I'd been constantly in power-struggles with my younger children. I was a typical man who would never ask directions or consult a roadmap. This book is the greatest roadmap I've ever read for a parent, especially one impacted by divorce, who wants to recognize what lies beneath our children's behavior and guide them to view themselves as important, worthy and good instead of spending their lives looking outside themselves for how to think, feel and behave. This book has not only eliminated 90% of the tantrums, but has been an astounding breakthrough in motivating my employees. They now have triple the motivation to excel, because I can communicate in a way where they happily share the responsibilities.

I first met Dr. Jayne Major while my chldren were abducted. I learned simple and loving methods to prepare for my children's eventual return, [84 days later], so that I had the tools to nuture and parent these young chldren after such a heartbreaking experience. That was over 4 years ago. Both children, now 7 and 9, are centered, communicative, responsible and loving. Dr. Jayne's breakthrough yet simple techniques are well promulgated in her most recent book. THIS IS THE GUIDE FOR BEING A LOVING PARENT AND BULDING A DEEP AND LASTING RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CHILDREN [these techniques work equally well other humans too!] This book should be a manditory guide for all caring parents!

Breakthrough Parenting is a must have for all parents, especially those raising children after divorce. The Breakthrough Parenting technique is a revolutionary approach to teaching your child self-confidence, strong values, personal resposibility and excellence.

The skills I have learned from reading Jayne's book have helped me get through the "terrible-twos" with my son gracefully and communicate more effectively with a difficult ex-spouse.

Best read in a long time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Parenting helps Counselors w/Kids, February 4, 2001
This review is from: Breakthrough Parenting : A Revolutionary New Way to Raise Children (Paperback)
As a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern I work with very troubled youth and their caretakers. For the last year I have studied several parenting methodologies and have attended dozens of parenting classes, searching for insight and inspiration. Nothing I have experienced thus far has held a candle to Jayne Major's Breakthrough Parenting! Finally, a parenting method that addresses all aspects of the childs development and inspires holistic and respectful care of our most precious resource: children. This book is both psychologically sophisticated and simple to understand. It inspires a personal and loving style of family living that treats each family member with dignity and love, while holding children responsible to a standard of self discipline that will serve them well into adulthood. This book shows you how to give your children both roots and wings: contributing to a future society of healthy, happy, respectful and loving individuals. Our future needs a "breakthrough", and Jayne has done a beautiful job in informing such work in the world.

What I LOVE about Dr. Major's approach is that it doesn't "wave a flag" about the perfection of one specific parenting style. Instead, she provides a wide breadth of techniques and tools that supply me with a variety of solutions to parenting challenges. And as a parent of 5 kids, I can assert that what works with one kid probably won't work with the next... or with the same kid twice! Hooray, hooray! At last there is a definitive approach that makes raising kids fun and effective. No more flying by the seat of the pants for me!
