Book Description

0393703037 978-0393703030 May 1999 1

For people with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, antipsychotic medications are the key to recovery.

Yet, older medications have serious side effects, do not completely alleviate the psychotic symptoms, and rarely affect other symptoms like lethargy.

The new antipsychotics have several advantages over the older medications, and are transforming the lives of many people, but they are not for everyone: They also have side effects and the cost can be prohibitive. Breakthroughs in Antipsychotic Medications helps consumers and their families weigh the pros and cons of switching medications and guides them through the process of switching. With clear, simple language, the book answers such questions as: What are antipsychotic medications and what do they do? What kinds of antipsychotic are available and how are they different? How do I know if switching might (or might not) be a good idea? When is the best time to switch? Which medication should I switch to? How do I make the switch? What will happen after I switch? How can I afford the cost of the new antipsychotics?

The book also gives clinicians technical details on the new medications and their side effects. For example, eight “medication fact sheets” and seven “side effect fact sheets” are included, as well as a discussion of the switching process, assessing the patient's response to the switch, and the long-term issues after switching antipsychotics. A clear and authoritative map for the road to recovery, Breakthroughs in Antipsychotic Medications is a valuable resource for consumers, families, and clinicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars best book on current medications for schizophrenia, April 4, 2000

This review is from: Breakthroughs in Antipsychotic Medications: A Guide for Consumers, Families, and Clinicians. (Paperback)
I think every doctor and clinician should have this book as a reference. It is also useful for family members and patients. It is the best one that I have found that gives clear information regarding the benefits of clozapine, risperdole, and olanzapine as well as guidelines for changing from the older medications that have more risk of tardive dyskinesia. If you only buy one book on up-to-date treatment of schizophrenia, this is the one! There are chapters with advice for patients as well. I gave a copy to a friend who needed this information, so am ordering another!

Talmadge Rogalla "Fifficus" (Somerset, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Breakthroughs in Antipsychotic Medications: A Guide for Consumers, Families, and Clinicians. (Paperback)
This book, which is a publication of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, deals with various anti psychotics including the atypicals.

The book explains what anti psychotics are and what they do. There is quite an authoritive account on negative symptoms. A list of the medication is given and compares new medications to the older ones, especially with regard to side effects.

It discusses the issues involved in switching medications such as:-

Would it be wise or unwise to switch?
What medication to switch to?
What is the best time to switch?
The six steps involved in switching.
What happens after I switch?
How do I catch up with lost time?

This book deals with the topic of switching medication and is a guide for the layman as well as the clinician. It is an authoritive account written in plain English and is the first of its kind. An invaluable tool for sufferers considering switching.
