Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-Two overviews of flashpoints of conflict and change. Each begins with a useful if sketchy historical introduction to its respective region, and then concentrates on more recent events. Harbor attempts to explain the events that led to the August 1991 coup and the subsequent disintegration of the Soviet Union. His view is reasoned and balanced, at times giving the Soviet government the benefit of the doubt while remaining critical of its actions. There is at least one misprint (author Alexandra Kollontai appears as "Koolonati"). Smith focuses on the turmoil between the majority of black South Africans and the white minority government, and describes the struggles for independence in Mozambique, Angola, Zimbabwe, and Namibia; the civil wars in Angola and Mozambique; and destabilization attempts by South Africa over the entire region. He firmly opposes apartheid and traces the roots of conflict in the area to the South African government. Although the line of argument is not consistently clear, and there are inaccuracies and misprints (for example: author Andre Brink appears as "Blink"; the date of South African independence is incorrectly given as 1926), this title should be useful for reports or as background reading. Historical and contemporary photographs of varying quality appear in both titles.
