As a surgeon who does a fair amount of breast surgery, I recommend this book, HIGHLY, to any body (including men) who may have or may be facing breast cancer. As a surgeon who does a fair amount of breast surgery, I recommend this book, HIGHLY, to any body (including men) who may have or may be facing breast cancer. The book (which, yes, I have read), is given, by myself, to each and every patient of mine who has breast cancer. It IS, unfortunately, rather technical--but breast cancer isn't easy--and hence, this book. I believe strongly in educating patients as much as possible; my ONLY criticism of the book is lack of good, SIMPLE, photographs and illustrations which, of course, always makes a book easier to read. 4/5 stars because of this. I will continue to purchase the book and give it to my patients. It will answer ALL of their questions--they will just have to dedicate their lives to educating themselves if they want to survive breast cancer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that is readable in a time of need., February 16, 2005
This review is from: Breast Cancer For Dummies (Paperback)
I bought this book for a friend who has cancer. It offers information and support both medically and emotionally for anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. It is a gift for its clarity and kindness. An easy read that can help someone begin to be empowered when their world has been turned upside down. Thank you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why I think everyone should have this book, March 15, 2009

I found a lump in my breast over two years ago. When I had to go to my mother to tell her I had breast cancer she took me to the book store and we bought about 6 or 7 books on breast cancer. When I got them home and starting looking through them, for me this one was the best one. The other ones were very doctor talk and for someone who was just told she has breast cancer is was a lot to take in. But this book was so easy and actually explained to me what to expect next. It made me feel like the doctors were telling me was what they were supposed to be telling me and made it easier to not second guess them. Really for me the book was almost like having a second opinion. Even one of the Mammogram X-rays in the book looked almost like it could have been my X-Ray. I recently went on line and bought a number of these exact same books and sent them to some on line pen pals across the country to promote getting mammograms. I thought if they have the book they may be better prepared to be proactive in breast care and help themselves in the future. I think this book is a wonderful book and for anyone who is going through breast cancer, they should have this book!

This book helped me by answering some of the questions I have about this horrible mess. It answered the questions as if someone was sitting beside me and we were talking about it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Primer for 4 1/2 Stars, December 6, 2009
This review is from: Breast Cancer For Dummies (Paperback)
This is a good book for a patient facing
breast cancer. The author cautions to get
a Board Certified cancer specialist,
second opinions and show up for follow-up
visits religiously. The book is written
in simple English without too much
medicalese. The presentation is a bit skimpy
on the nutritional dimensions and alternative
medicine. Dr. Burton Goldberg has the
"Definitive Guide" which has cancer protocols
with the attendant medical journal references.

The volume accomplishes the following:
o it assists in decoding the pathology report
o there are clear explanations of the stage of
each treatment milestone
o the actual chemo is explained and contrasted
o hormonal therapies are given
o the mastectomy types are explained
i.e. simple, skin sparing and prophylactic

The skin may feel tight in the post surgery.
This aspect may be aided by acupuncture,
rolfing or more advanced massage techniques.

Cancer survivors have specific things to do in
the post-operative period; namely,

o avoid sunburn
o use anti-biotic creams on cuts
o use a thimble for sewing
o keep nails moist with cream
o have blood drawn on the arm opposite the surgery
o wear gloves for household work involving chemicals
o use an electric shaver
o avoid excessive heat and treat burns immediately
o don't wear tight clothes
o utilize shoulder straps for support
o wear light bras
o never miss an appointment

Overall, the presentation is excellent.

1.0 out of 5 stars Some cancers disappear untreated, study finds, July 23, 2009
This review is from: Breast Cancer For Dummies (Paperback)
There are many people who cure (themselves) from cancer (and other diseases, for that matter). A few things they all seem to have in common:
They take responsibility for their health/sickness away from doctors or anyone else.
They get rid of negative feelings (like anger, grudge, helplessness and, most of all, by doing this, FEAR). In other words, they CHANGE their lifestyle (most of the time they also take control of what they eat - which is where this book comes in handy).
But most important (togheter with finding peace of mind):
They give their body TIME TO HEAL ITSELF!
Here's a few links for the interested:

And, for the brave, to take it a bit further (in terms of the cause of cancer):

Hope this will be of help for a few people.
