5.0 out of 5 stars Great resource for breast cancer prevention worries, October 4, 2005
By
This review is from: The Breast Cancer Prevention Plan (Paperback)
I borrowed this book from my local library and went to Amazon to purchase it, it is that informative. I am concerned about breast cancer (with a family history) and am currently on Tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer. I wanted some answers about using preventative drugs like this and possible alternatives. This book has the information I need to further discuss this with my doctor. It explains diet, supplements and testing in a technical manner but it also summarizes everthing more simply at the end of each step. There is a great explanation of estrogen, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Voted Breast Cancer Prevention Book of the Year 2005, October 19, 2005
This review is from: The Breast Cancer Prevention Plan (Paperback)
This book has been voted book of the year by the American Breast Cancer Prevention Foundation for 2005. We feel very strongly that every woman should read this book. We no longer agree with American doctors who wait until you have breast cancer and then fight a "war" on that cancer...a war that has 200,000 casualties per year. The very best treatment for breast cancer is to never get it in the first place and that's why we recommend DR Conley's book so strongly. 5.0 out of 5 stars Showing this book to my doctor., October 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Breast Cancer Prevention Plan (Paperback)
I poked around through the web and amazon listings several years ago and found this book almost by accident Here is what I like about it:

It is written by a specialist in preventive medicine, a discipline which our out of whack health system ignores.

He backs up his suggestions with research results which are based on (a) laboratory animal experiments (b) scientifically accurate depictions of the metabolic pathways which show how the suggestion works and (c) epidemiological studies.

It does not get any better than this!

This is NOT your standard popular breast cancer book written to increase sales. Nor does it advocate unproven alternative remedies in glowing terms.

I know enough statistics that I am not sure I buy the 70 to 80% reduction in breast cancer incidence he claims. But I am absolutely sure that his recommendations dramatically reduce both incidence and death from breast cancer at a significantly higher rate than that given by regular mammograms. (BTW, I am still getting the regular mammograms)

I have probably had fifty yearly visits to the ob gyn guy and twenty mammograms. I have read fifty to a hundred articles on cancer prevention and breast cancer. I have taken the breast cancer exam given on the Internet. I choose the most reliable sources I can find. In all that time I have seen exactly one reference to his suggested practices. I quote that reference, which I believe came from the Harvard Medical School. 'It is known that consumption of soy products reduces the incidence of breast cancer, but it is impossible to incorporate that in the American diet.'

The last mammogram I had was at a new breast center. A valet parked my car, the lobby had a waterfall, and an attendant handed me a stylish heated robe. Totally irrelevant! My mammogram was examined by a supersharp radiologist proficient at maybe finding minute clusters of cancer cells -- but unable to tell me how likely these were to progress to a cancer. (Not very, I think). Spending the time reading Dr. Conley's book would have given my chances of avoiding or surviving breast cancer a much, much, much better boost.
