With a focus on the basic imaging principles of breast MRI rather than on mathematical equations, this book takes a practical approach to imaging protocols, which helps radiologists increase their diagnostic effectiveness. It walks the reader through the basics of MRI, making it especially accessible to beginners. From a detailed outline of equipment prerequisites for obtaining high quality breast MRI to instructions on how to optimize image quality, expanded discussions on how to obtain optimized dynamic information, and explanations of good and bad imaging techniques, the book covers the topics that are most relevant to performing breast MRI.

Editorial Reviews

Review

From the reviews: "This is an overview of the physics of MRI both generally and with specific attention to how it relates to imaging the breasts. … The intended audience is practicing radiologists, in particular those who perform breast imaging and are incorporating or have incorporated MRI into their diagnostic armamentarium. … Overall, this would make an excellent addition to the library of breast imaging radiologists who are either currently performing breast MRI or are just starting to use MRI in their practice." (Dana Smetherman, Doody’s Review Service, March, 2008) "Breast MRI: Fundamentals and Technical Aspects … define the technical basis and clinical implementation of breast magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for physicians, technologists, and physicists. … In summary, Dr Hendrick’s book is highly recommended as a reference. … It should be a required textbook for health care professionals … . It will be a widely used reference for identifying and correcting image artifacts and for line-tuning protocols. The small size and low cost are attributes that will also promote this book’s widespread use." (Steven E. Harms, Radiology, Vol. 253 (1), October, 2009) “Edward Hendrick is a medical physicist who has been involved in the development of MRI as applied to breast imaging. This book reflects his extensive knowledge and great interest in MRI of the breast. … This has the advantage that the images are of very high quality, even when they are relatively small. This book … is an excellent resource for anyone wishing to really understand how the image of the breast is produced by magnetic resonance.” (Rosemary Toye, RAD Magazine, April, 2011) “In this pocket-size, soft cover 241 page book (hard cover edition published in 2008) prof. Hendrick shares all his experience and knowledge he has gathered over the years as a researcher and teacher in the field of breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). … The book will be greatly appreciated by all those who are dealing with breast MRI due to its more and more widespread use and its importance in the clinical and diagnostic setting.” (Giampiero Beluffi, La Radiologia Medica, Vol. 116, 2011)

From the Back Cover

Breast MRI has emerged as a valuable diagnostic adjunct to mammography and breast ultrasound in the detection of primary and recurrent breast cancers and as an important screening tool in women at high risk for breast cancer. Still, many radiologists who rely on MRI do not have knowledge of the fundamentals essential to achieving and maintaining high image quality. With a focus on the basic imaging principles of breast MRI rather than on mathematical equations, this book takes a practical approach to breast imaging that helps radiologists improve their breast MRI protocols. The text walks the reader through the basics of MRI, making it especially accessible to beginners. From a detailed outline of equipment prerequisites for obtaining high quality breast MRI to instructions on how to optimize image quality, expanded discussions on how to obtain optimized dynamic information, and examples of good and bad imaging techniques, the book covers the topics relevant to performing high quality breast MRI. By presenting the key aspects of breast MRI in a straightforward manner and with clear images, this practical book benefits all practitioners seeking to increase their working knowledge and competence in breast MRI, and is also of value to residents preparing for board exams in diagnostic radiology.

More About the Author

R. Edward Hendrick, Ph.D., is Clinical Professor of Radiology at the University of Colorado - Denver, Anschutz School of Medicine. A board-certified diagnostic medical physicist, he was involved in the initial clinical application of magnetic resonance imaging, its application to breast imaging, and the development and evaluation of digital mammography. He helped establish the American College of Radiology Accreditation Programs in Mammography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Breast MRI, and Stereotactic Breast Biopsy. He also helped define American College of Radiology and FDA standards for mammography and mammography quality control, serving as a charter member of the FDA's Mammography Quality Assurance Advisory Committee. He is the lead author of all four editions the American College of Radiology's Mammography Quality Control Manuals. He was principal investigator of the first trials obtaining FDA approval of digital mammography and was co-principal investigator of the NCI-sponsored ACRIN DMIST screening trial of digital mammography, which demonstrated that digital mammography is superior to film for younger women and women with denser breasts. His research focuses on new technologies to improve breast cancer detection and on improving the quality of existing breast imaging technologies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!, January 24, 2008
This review is from: Breast MRI: Fundamentals and Technical Aspects (Hardcover)
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is currently doing breast MRI or interesting in starting. The first several chapters are directed toward understanding the physics behind breast MR and are easy to understand even by a non-physicist. The second half of the book turns toward protocols, safety and optimizing breast MRI techniques. The book is clearly written and has changed my clinical practice. I am now performing studies that use magnet time more efficiently and with improved image quality. This book is valuable to both the beginner and the experienced breast imager. It is particularly helpful to radiologists who want to improve their breast MRI protocols. I also recommend this book to any technologist who wants to know more about breast MRI.
