A Must Read for Any Breast Cancer Patient,
By
This review is from: The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook, Second Edition (Paperback)
I had spent countless hours researching the different reconstruction options when I was fortunate enough to read about this book on the Young Survival Coalition's message board. I immediately ordered it and was amazed at the clear descriptions of the procedures. I also loved the section that guided you on how to prepare for the surgery. I can't say enough about this book!

Valuable Pre- and Post-Surgery Guidebook,
By Survivor (CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook: Issues and Answers from Research to Recovery (Paperback)
What a valuable resource. Kathy Steligo puts all the facts in layperson's terms without talking down to the reader. In fact, her friendly tone made me think she was talking just to me. The book answered so many of my questions in a very reassuring way. Obviously, it can't replace a consultation with a plastic surgeon, but it really augments what I learned from my doctor. I plan to share this book with my plastic surgeon.

This review is from: The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook: Issues and Answers from Research to Recovery (Paperback)
This book is recommended by the Center for Breast Surgery in New Oleans (NOLA). I've read about half the book and have learned more than I have after doing extensive internet research and having a consult with 2 plastic surgeons. This is the first resource [...] that names the doctors and centers that have the most experience with the different types of breast reconstuction. The discussion of potiential side effects is straightforward, not frightening, and gives actual percentage rates for each complication AND what can be done to deal with the complication if it arises. This is the first resouce I've found that doesn't just list the complications and stop the discussion, but gives information that reassures me that complications can be dealt with. Every woman who is diagnosed with breast cancer or the BRCA1 or BRCA@ gene mutation should read this book BEFORE starting ANY treatment, even before lumpectomy. This book gives the information needed to make a truly informed decision, info that a general surgeon doesn't give you but that you really need to know.

Wealth of information,
This review is from: The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook, Second Edition (Paperback)
This was just what I needed, when I needed it. Kathy Steligo gives us her first hand experiences, adds quotes from other women who have been through the different procedures and combines it all with medical facts and figures to help the rest of us make sense of the confusing and often very scary reality of breast reconstruction. I'm sure her advice on handling insurance company issues is also keeping me from making mistakes that I would later regret financially!
This book has been tremendously helpful for both my decisions of prophylactic mastectomy and post-cancer treatment reconstruction. Having breast cancer is not something any of us choose, but when we take what life deals us and use our experiences to educate others, that is truly noble. Thank you Kathy and all the women in your book, for having the courage to face cancer head on and the decency to help the rest of us by sharing your experiences and the knowledge you gained from your journeys past cancer, to reconstruction. I wish you all health and happiness.

This guidebook is excellent-it quickly brought me up to speed on all the current techniques for reconstructive surgery, how they compare, and what factors to consider for each one-before, during and after. The author is so down-to-earth that she makes learning about complex options-ones she's had to face herself-a lot easier. Knowing what questions to ask and how to understand the answers makes a huge difference when talking to your doctor. Get this book and read it before your next appointment.

This review is from: The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook: Issues and Answers from Research to Recovery (Paperback)
This book is exactly what I prayed for when I was told I would need a breast biopsy. I wanted to approach even the slight possibility of a mastectomy with knowledge.I didn't know where to turn with my many questions and I wasn't even sure about what to ask until I discovered this excellent book with clear explanations on breast cancer surgery and reconstruction. Kathy Steligo's meticulous research and information on available resources took an enormous load off my mind at an extremely stressful time.

I know another good book,
This review is from: The Breast Reconstruction Guidebook, Second Edition (Paperback)
"Goddesses Don't Buy Green Bananas" is a heart-felt compilation of extraordinary photos of some extraordinary women. It is a pictorial essay that will grab your attention with stories of triumph, conviction, power and bravery.; a book that Lesley Daley (author/photographer) wished was available when her thirty-five year old husband was diagnosed with cancer. Driven by her own desperate need to find "comfort" with cancer, she produced this book. The "Goddesses" that are photographed in this book are real-women; they are wives, mothers and friends. Their ages are from 12 to 70 years old; a widespread audience can personally identify with one or all of them. Each one was just too young, too much in love or had too much work to do. There was not a right time to get cancer. It takes away too much and it does not care who you are. Cancer shows no respect about age, beauty, wealth or fame. It s only when cancer faces unusual human capability that the story is some times reversed. Check out the webite: goddessbook.com
