Fantastic for new and not-so-new nursing moms,
By Associate Professor of Psychology (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Breastfeeding: A Parent's Guide (Paperback)
Amy Spangler's (previous and now updated) book remained on my nightstand for 4 years straight, as I had 3 children in a span of 4 years. She covers all breastfeeding issues one can think of, addressing "normal" issues, as well as troubleshooting numerous different problems. I found her book to be extremely helpful for my one child where I had no nursing difficulties, as well as for my 2nd child with whom I had some nursing difficulties, and most importantly for my third child with whom I had significant nursing problems. Thanks in large part to Amy's book, I had an extremely rewarding nursing relationship with all 3 of my children. As an Associate Professor of Psychology with extensive clinical research publishing experience, I can also add that her book is very well-written and an invaluable resource for anyone embarking on nursing their baby.

Great for a first time mom!,
This review is from: Breastfeeding: A Parent's Guide (Paperback)
I absolutely could not have lived without this book when I was nursing my son. I read the entire book before he was born, and then used the book as a reference in the hospital and after we returned home. Frequently I would find myself supporting my son with one arm, and holding this book in the other.
This book remained on my nightstand for almost a year! I highly recommend this book for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding their child. If you're interested in learning more from Amy Spangler - check out her website [..] - it's great, too!

It doesn't matter if you are a first time mother or if you are a mom of your third baby...you will use this book!!! There are always questions about breastfeeding and sometimes you need answers at times of the day (or night) when you can't call someone. Amy's book is perfect at these times...very easy to reference and so helpful. I love it and use it constantly!

This is the best reference book for any nursing mom. I have used it constantly while nursing my son. The chapters are concise and complete--something a mother up at 2am with questions and a screaming newborn needs. The drawings were very helpful in trying to figure out how to position the baby; the chapter for fathers provided a thorough explaination about their part in the breastfeeding relationship; and the chapters on milk expression and storage give exact information that a busy mom needs to read. The great part about the book is that if you only have time to read what you need, you can find it easily and get the information. It's a book that I couldn't have done without.

Great book! I recommend it!,
This review is from: Breastfeeding: A Parent's Guide (Paperback)
This book really helped me. I have two daughters and I used this book as a reference both times I breastfed. I liked the different sections, specially the one discussing milk storage. I also liked the illustrations that showed all the types of positions for nursing and how the baby latches on, etc. Nicely done!

The Very Best Breastfeeding Book for New Parents,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Breastfeeding: A Parent's Guide, Ninth Edition (Paperback)
I am an RN and CLC as well as the mother of 3 breastfeed children. I have read many books on breastfeeding designed for new parents, and Amy Spangler's book is the best one I have found. I love it for everything that it is not. It is not loaded with medical jargon or specialized information - all the things that cause mothers-to-be to fear breatsfeeding. There are far too many overly technical and long winded texts available that leave the reader feeling overwhelmed simply by the idea of nursing. The practical information Amy shares in this book is in such a gentle and encouraging tone. It is easy to read and has all of the information a family needs to become familiar with breastfeeding. Breastfeeding: A Parent's Guide is an empowering book, written from the approach that every mom can successfully nurse her baby. Not only did I personally reach for this book during my years as a nursing mom, but I teach breastfeeding classes and I share this book with every family I work with. Thank you, Amy!

I LOVE this book...read it before you deliver and bring it to the hospital. This book covers everything that you need for breastfeeding without going into far fetched, rare problems...that's when you'll need a lactation consultant anyway. Plus, there is no overkill or unnecessary information. Spangler nailed it with this book. It's the only one you'll need.
My son and I are still breastfeeding 7 months later, no problems... Thanks, Amy!

I really enjoyed this book a lot. This is my second time reading the book because you always forget simple things. When I found out I was pregnant again this book was at the top of my list of things to get! I would recommend this as a gift to any expectant mother who is interested in breastfeeding her child.

I picked this up on a recommendation and while I haven't put the advice to use yet; I have read through the book and think it will be very useful. It is full of tips and guidlines on, what I imagine, is everything possible related to breastfeeding. Plus, this is the book that was handed out during my hospital-sponsored breastfeeding class, which I take as a very good sign.
