4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for RPG fans
Breath of Fire is a must-have for RPG fans!

After being spoiled by the graphics and sound of the recently released Golden Sun title, I was expecting a little bit more in the graphics and sound department. But don't let its slight lack of eye-candy fool you. This game has an excelent story line and great gameplay and makes up for its lack of glitter.

Breath of Fire has a similar layout to Golden Sun, consisting of an overhead map, groups of players, town scenes, and random battles. The story starts out in your typical "wake up!" senerio, as your home town is in trouble. Although, there is a slightly different ending to this situation then I would have expected.

Battle scenes are 3/4's overhead, and similar to Crono Trigger, including the small HP numbers that drop down as well as HP indicators. The battle mode has an "auto" function, which makes things much easier when you just need to "attack" something. It can be interrupted at any point. You are also able to use various items and spells that you collect during your travels.

The overhead map has a gradual day-and-night feature, which intergrates very well into the storyline. You can also run, which makes travel between two points much more managable than Golden Sun.

In the towns, you can talk to people, purchase and sell items, and uncover secrets. There are also the occasional "tasks" which sidetrack you from your ultimate journey, but these tasks add a slight twist that we have seen in many other RPG's.

Control is sometimes changed between two characters, as you take the role of others in the game. This feature makes you feel much more part of the story, rather than being forced into something without choice.

Make sure you pick up a copy! You wont be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the imbecils., October 12, 2001

Read above. The first guy had to ruin it. "I IMMEDIATELY RETURNED THIS GAME!!" said the fool. Then how can you give a fair review of it?

Anyway, as someone like myself who has played almost any RPG in existance, and have not been fond of the lackluster games released on the Playstation for the past few years, I must go back and say Breath of Fire is one of my top 5 RPG's of all time. Right next to the likes of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3, Earthbound and Illusion of Gaia. The game has beautiful music, basic but nice graphics, a solid story, tons of towns and enemies, and just all around fun. Breath of Fire 1 completely annhilates Breath of Fire 3 and 4, so even if you did not like those, don't worry. From someone who loves the classic SNES RPGs, take my word for it: GET THIS GAME!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Purchase, February 13, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Firstly, CAPCOM knows how to make Role Playing Games (RPG)
A good cast of characters, a good storyline, and challenging gameplay.
Not only does your main character,Ryu, grow in strength as you travel alongside him, but he meets other characters whom you can have join you, and enjoy each of their unique skills:
Ryu can fish, and the fish he catches can be used to heal, cure and others.
Bo can hunt, catching Deer or Wild boars,
Ox can knock down walls and smash coconuts from trees.
Twists in the storyline have you searching for a volcano under the sea, entering someone's dreams to rescue them, and searching for cracks in the wall...to find a master thief...
The replay value is astounding, and even though I cleared the game, I was still left longing for more.
The graphics are awesome, the sound is awesome, and a new challenge is that you can only have four characters in the frontlines of your party at a time...
And parents, this game is safe for kids...cartoon graphics and no realistic violence make this a winner, although the ability to read is required.
Because of games like this, I always buy capcom RPGs

I played this game when it was first released for the Super Nintendo. It's one of my favorite RPGs. The plot is exellent, the characters are cool, it's one of the best. Whether you like classics, or are just looking for a game with some story and emotion behind it, Breath of Fire is a must!
We can only hope that they'll also re-release it's much improved sequel, Breath of Fire II!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A really fun game but it has got flaw's, January 4, 2002

I was looking forward to Golden Sun so much, but here in Sweden it's not coming untill March. Well, to have something to do untill Golden Sun is relesed I bought Breath Of Fire. It has a pretty good storyline but I was told that the graphics were going to be superb, they were only half as good as I was expecting them to be. In battles you see your party from behind and I have to say that in battles the graphics are indeed very nice but when you go around in the world it's not half as good graphics as in the battles. The game has very good control and one thing I'm glad to see is the dash button. The game is very big and if your looking for an rpg that lasts for long this is the game for you!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars A Tedious Game, July 14, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Breath of Fire (Video Game)
Breath of Fire starts with the classic 'wake up, you're town's in trouble' beginning. It then proceeds to assign you a task of rescuing some important figure. As BoF's plot gradually unfolds, you will find that it eventually becomes too tedious to keep track of. If someone requests/tells you to travel to some distant town/cave/dungeon etc., you will find that they don't even hint where it is. This makes you search every possible place for something, making the game irritating and tedious to play. The monster-encounters are especially annoying, as you meet monsters every fifteen-twenty seconds or so, making progress slow.

The graphics are also simple and unsatisfactory for serious gamers. Characters appear to be drawn on Microsoft Paint, and if they walk, their feet simply move up and down. Battles are turn-based, and graphics on spells and attacks are limited. Saving is also a wearisome process, as you MUST save at a certain location.

As you travel around the land, you collect different characters to aid you on your quest. You will find they are all unique and have different abilities to aid you. There are also various items to outfit your party with to balance out attacks and defenses, giving the game a fun view on equipment. The setback, however, is that almost all items are abbreviated. This irritated me, as I could hardly figure out what an item was.

Overall, the game is long and laborious. At first, it might seem exciting, but steadily it declines to a truly dreary game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very engaging RPG, October 4, 2003
This review is from: Breath of Fire (Video Game)
Final Fantasy aside, Breath of Fire is one of the longest-running RPG series around, and the handheld version of the first adventure gets decent treatment. Yet despite the re-appearance of the game's fresh visuals and unique play aspects, the lifeless narrative doesn't provide the immersive experience that you'd expect. Originally released by Square on the Super NES in 1994, Breath of Fire arrives on the Game Boy Advance with enhanced cinemas, but otherwise remains unchanged. You play as Ryu, a lone hero who can also transform into a variety of powerful dragons. During the course of Ryu's quest, various characters join your party, each with their own personal demons and diversions that involve the entire team. An RPG's lifeblood is a strong story, but BoF's narrative is remarkably uninvolving. You'll spend a lot of time engaging in mundane tasks-"talk to A, then B, then A again, and then C"-and navigating a series of seemingly endless mazes. Even the turn-based battles lack flair, except for the boss battles. Be prepared to spend a lot of time with this one, but a new Dash feature speeds you through the game and saves batteries. BoF delivers a tight visual and audio package. Colorful sprites fill the screen with arresting colors and special effects, while the soundtrack provides decent music accompanied by muted sound effects. Workmanlike controls feature easy menu navigation and responsive character movement. On the whole, Breath of Fire is an enjoyable RPG that easily kills spare time. Just don't expect a thoroughly involving adventure on the same level as later games in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breath of Fire, January 2, 2002

My first recollection of Breath of fire came with Breath of Fire 2 for the SNES. While I admit, it was an awesome game in its own right. I was anxious to round up the original for it. But, alas, I wasn't able to. Now, with the Gameboy Advance, I finally get the chance to check out the Classic. So, what can I tell you about Breath of Fire for the Gameboy Advance....Well, it's been an absolute blast to play. I hadn't been able to put it down since I got it for Christmas. I've even brought it to work with me a time or two to play. Graphically, it's very colorful and animated. There's alot of exploration, and things to do in the game. Hundreds of spells to do battle with and battles galore. You can even exchange items with your GBA link cable. For a classic RPG, I highly recommend it to all.
Given it's not Final Fantasy but it's just as good. If not better in some respects. It's definately worth the price of admission.
Do yourself a favor and check it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good game, and fond memories, October 17, 2001
This review is from: Breath of Fire (Video Game)
I remember buying this game for my Super Nintendo years ago. The game was made by Capcom, but distributed by Squaresoft, and anything by Square had to be good, right?
Anyway, the game itself was fun, if standard. You control Ryu as he and his merry band of adventurers attempt to defeat an evil dragon (whose name escapes me now, I am sorry to say). Of course, the story spirals from here, and you are caught up in a plot by a goddess to rule the world. By today's standards, it may seem trite, but there are many bonuses (for example, how many games let you fish?). Your characters (eight or nine in total) each have special abilities, allowing you to open secret areas, which adds to the replay value. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the game, although I think it has been seven or eight years since I played it. However, I am sure that the Advance version will have new bonuses, so needless to say, I'll be killing a few MORE hours with this game. I think it is worth checking out...

This is a good game, the graphics are a little outdated, and the sound repetitive, but the gameplay is unmatched. The spells are truly amazing, and the bosses are challenging. I you like RPG's, and got a GBA, I suggest Breath of Fire as a pick-up title.Take my advice, this is a game really easy to play, but hard to master.
