2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as BOF 1
I started out by playing Breath of Fire III on playstation, loved it. BOF4 on playstation, loved it. got BOF 1 on gameboy advance, it was fun, but now BOF 2 disappointed the ... . I'm sorry, capcom, but maybe you should be more choosy when it comes to translating titles from platform to platform. Maybe this game would have held my attention, had i not bought Golden Sun...

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps getting better, October 4, 2003
This review is from: Breath of Fire II (Video Game)
Arguably the best game in Capcom's RPG series, Breath of Fire II makes a seamless transition from the 16-bit Super NES to the small-screened Game Boy Advance. Although the game got smaller, it's still an engrossing adventure that no RPGer on the go should be without. BOFII is essentially an epic quest of self-discovery. As one of the fleeting kin of a group known as the Dragon Clan (so named for their ability to transform into gigantic fire-breathing things), you'll meet up with eight other diverse souls and embark on a quest to unlock the secrets of your past...and save the world in the process. The road is loaded with entertaining and challenging side quests that keep the game fresh and exciting-even when the narrative takes occasional trips to cliché-ville. Sibling rivalry, lost love, domineering parents-you name it, this game's got it all. The game's only flaw is the ease with which you can defeat bosses and reach the end of the game. Anyone who's ever played a turn-based combat system will immediately take to BOFII's antiquated slug-fests, but most of the time you'll just hit Auto-Battle. Despite an occasional tough opponent, you'll bulldoze over most monsters without breaking so much as a hand sweat. BOFII's plush sprite visuals are matched by an atmospheric music score that admirably gets the job done. Straightforward and simple controls solidly track your every move, too. In the realm of today's high-powered next-gen role-players, BOFII is an excellent time-killer-not to mention one of the better entries in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars a GREAT storyline.., April 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Breath of Fire II (Video Game)
I don't know about you, but storyline and gameplay is the most important aspect of the game to me. Good music and graphics are a plus but it doesn't make or break a game.

I played the Super Nintendo version and the storyline is amazing. Keep in mind this is a pretty old game and it's not like the Final Fantasy games you might have played. It's a little slow and pretty difficult but when you beat the game, you will not feel disappointed.

There are 3 possible endings depending on how you play the game. There's also a dozen characters to choose from and lots of secrets. In your Township, you can combine your characters with elemental shamans to give them new skills and abilities as well as make recipes and rest up.

Let's just say if you liked the old Final Fantasy games on SNES, you will LOVE this game. Almost the exact same thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breath of Fire II is the best RPG ever!, June 25, 2002

I have played every Breath of Fire there is and have beat every one... except II. This game is the best snes game on the market. The chararcters are awesome(Ryu, Katt,Bleu,Rand, and Spar) the others Sten, Jean Nina and Bow are cool too but the above are the best. Anyway, Breath of Fire II has the best story line of the four and is probably the most challengeing as well. If you like the seris or are just a flat out RPG fan, this is a must have. On a concluding note, in my opinion the Breath of Fire seris is better than the Final Fantasy seris and I love every one. Get It!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible game!, June 7, 2002
This review is from: Breath of Fire II (Video Game)
Well, what can I say? If you're one of those gamers who can bear to look past what some people call "non-innovative graphics" or you know a good game when you see one regardless of age, then I strongly suggest this game. You take the role of Ryu (deja-vu, huh?) and little by little you meet up with 7+1 (there's an optional character) characters, each contributing to the game. This is one of those games that has a story which sucks you in and won't let go. Plus the fact that it has more than one ending (you folks'll have to figure it out yourselve's) more than entices you to play through it at least more than one time.

Now, to technical stuff. Graphically, it has wonderful 2D graphics, considering the year it came out. The music is wonderfull, and contributes to the feel of each scene. The control is smooth and there's a run button (thank God!) The battle system is slightly outdated, but consider that there wasn't much variety in battle systems back in the day.

All in all, this is one hell of a game that shouldn't be overlooked. Best thing I ever spent 40 bucks on. Buy it (if you have the money, that is.)

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS is a fantastic game!!!, April 1, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Breath of Fire II (Video Game)
About seven or eight years ago, Capcom decided to release the sequel to the first Breath of Fire game. I had thoroughly enjoyed the first one, and decided to plunk down my hard earned dollars for the second one.
Upon first glance, I was sorely disappointed. The sound was weak, at BEST, the music was horrible, the graphics showed no improvement, and the whole game seemed way too hard (I died pretty often in the beginning just from the random encounters!).
However, I stayed the course, and wow, what a game! The plot begins years after the first BOF, with our character and his friend getting crushed in a battle against a surprise assailant. When the pair comes around, they find that the world around them has changed, and no one in their hometown has any recollection of the two. So, our happy pair embarks on a mission to see exactly what has occured here. I will say no more, but the story is great, and deepens the saga started in BOF.
You would be sorry NOT to buy this game, believe me...

This is truly one of the greatest RPGs of all time & has the best graphics of all the BOFs. My favorite character is Princess Nina, who is banished cause of a stupid superstition saying a person with black wings will destroy Wyndia. This game is VERY in depth, & even took me ahile to beat it! ^____^ You WON'T be dissapointed with this one!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bof2 Review, July 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Breath of Fire II (Video Game)
Breath of fire two is definitely one of the better gameboy advancde games. The graphics are wonderful for a gameboy advance; there is color, you have day and night and much more. At the begining the story is a bit slow but it picks up eventually. Eventually in the game you even get to build your own town which makes it much more interesting and you get to chose who you want to invite. The battle system has been improved and is easy to use. Overall Bof2 is an excellent game and a must for all serious gameboy advance players.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great Game Boy Advance RPG, May 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Breath of Fire II (Video Game)
Breath of Fire II is a spectacular example of what a good RPG should be. Rivaling Golden Sun for best RPG on the Game Boy Advance, I would highly reccomend this for any and all RPG fans. Breath of Fire II contains a great storyline, excellent battle system, and intriguing characters. An epic storyline and 20+ hour quest make this a great game to buy. Trust me: You won't regret adding this game to your GBA library.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Part of the Breath of Fire Series, July 3, 2002
By
Mary L. Nash-pyott (Illinois, United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Breath of Fire II (Video Game)
The first Breath of Fire game I picked up was Breath of Fire III for the PSX. I loved it and it continues to be my favorite of the entire series. But it sparked my interest - this was the third installation in the series, right? What about the previous 2? So I set out on a search.
I couldn't manage to get my hands on either of the original cartridges for the first 2 BoF games for under 50 dollars, so instead I went the illegal route and downloaded the ROMs of both. And by the time I was 15 minutes through the 2nd one, I was hooked.

Graphics - 7/10
The graphics are pretty bad by today's standards, what with games like Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2 on the market. But comparing them to other SNES games, they could be a LOT worse. The scenes were colorful, and the sprites for the characters were attractive. Towns looked different depending on if it was night or day, which was pretty impressive for games made in the SNES era. All in all, be thankful for this when questioning the graphics: at least they don't look like a class of kindergarteners built the entire game out of milk cartons while covered in flesh-eating slugs.

Music - 6/10
The music was a mixed bag, I'll admit. There were a few good ones, like 'Silence of the Sands' that set the mood pretty well, but most of the others just didn't inspire a whole lot of emotion in me. None of the music was mindnumbingly horrible, mind you, but it certainly didn't make me go out on an mp3 downloading spree.

Storyline - 9/10
This is without a doubt Breath of Fire II's strong point. It goes extremely slowly until 3 or 4 hours into the game - then it starts getting interesting. Saying any more would spoil it for anyone who hasn't played it through, but it's amazing to say the least.

Gameplay - 8/10
The battle system is standard RPG fare - turn-based, HP to keep track of health, MP to use magic, etc. Nothing to write home about. Some of the battles can be real challenges if you haven't grown an obscene amount levels or lack the right healing items/magic, but that's part of the fun sometimes. After a few hours of gameplay, you gain control of a town that you can build on and populate with characters all over the world. Perhaps my favorite part of the game is the ability to combine your characters with 'Shamans' to increase their power. If you hit the right combination, your character even changes form - some of those forms are, for lack of a better word, quite impressive.

Things That Don't Fit Into Any Other Category - 8/10
BoFII is filled with mini-games and other things to do, like hunting and fishing. Though I didn't really participate often in either of those things, it was still an interesting diversion from the storyline every once and awhile.
Characterization in BoFII, while not amazing, is still better than BoF1. By the end of the game, I identified with all of the characters - yes, even Jean. They each had their own personalities, but the poor translation didn't do them justice. And the Nina of this game is the only Nina out of the entire series that doesn't annoy me to the point of wanting to rip my eyes out so I didn't have to read any of their dialogue.

Overall, Breath of Fire II is far from a disappointment. If you like RPGs and appreciate the old classics, I definitely recommend picking this up.
