5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best snes games, March 25, 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Breath of Fire (Video Game)
This is truly a classic. I enjoyed playing it many times. There are plenty of treasure chests to find and the puzzels can be quite challenging. The difficulty level is ajusted to the player's level so it gives you a fighting chance, not like in some games where you can't win for loosing. I highly recommend this game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as FF, but still decent, October 28, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Breath of Fire (Video Game)
I had to speak up after seeing so many 5-star reviews. If epics like FFIV can be given 5 stars, then semi-epics like Breath of Fire have to be categorized differently.

This game has a lot of great features--a good battle system (with the exception of GUTS mode, which irritated me--just give enemies higher HP if it's gonna take so long to kill them); nice graphics, a pretty good story, and--the best part--VERY original characters. The problem is, the dialogue is so drastically abbreviated that I couldn't feel very much about anything that was going on! I can understand that there are capacity limits in making games, and that the makers can only do so much, but the dialog scenes? All they have to do is insert a bunch of text, maybe a few flashbacks here and there--it's not like it would have been difficult to have the characters interact with each other more or explain their feelings better, or sometimes just explain what the heck was going on (example: every time you approach a human villain to fight them, when you go into the battle screen they're suddenly a monster! I guess you're supposed to just assume that they've turned themselves into monsters by some magical power, but maybe that could've been explained a little better?). I don't know--I'm sure a lot of people have had this problem while playing the game, and maybe it was really one of the best when it came out, but I recently replayed FFIV and even though the graphics and gameplay were on a similar level, there was a HUGE difference in the dramatic presentation of the story. (Part of this may also have been that the music was better in FFIV.)
In short, if you are okay with an RPG feeling like the Legend of Zelda games--where you only have one character in your party and the game is all about performing quests that don't involve emotional scenes pertaining to your character, then you'll like Breath of Fire. If you need more from an RPG, however--emotional cutscenes, drama between characters WITHIN your party and not just NPCs, etc.--then you probably wouldn't like this game. My overall impression of it was just, "Important NPC says one line telling you what to do. Travel to next place, battle battle battle, go through five dungeons, battling all the way, retrieve artifact, battle your way back to town, get one or two lines of appreciation from the NPC who gave you the quest, and SOMETIMES (not always) a vague hint about what to do next. Thing to do next: same as above, rinse and repeat."

Oh, and the music changing when you go from outside a house to the inside of a house annoyed the crap out of me. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Breath of Fire Game in the Series!, August 8, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Breath of Fire (Video Game)
Square Soft made a nice impact in co-producing this game with Capcom. The game is fun, challenging, and unique. I can't count the number of times I went hunting and fishing! Battles are turn based, but seem to be in place. The bosses are really tough. Often they stay going after their HP bar is depleted and even start unleashing more powerful attacks.

The game is long and complex and well worth playing again if you enjoy retro RPGs!

Update 12/9/2011 ~

Played through again on my SNES emulator on my phone... it's still a remarkable game, but decidedly lopsided. Once you get Karn's transformations, the game gets too easy. The last boss is a joke if you use Agni.

I will probably play through again and not use Karn's transformations in order to try a tougher challenge... we'll see.

Also, the game is rather short compared to Lufia and Final Fantasy titles and lacks some depth overall. Nevertheless, it is a solid SNES RPG and hard to overlook when talking about the SNES RPGs without the word FINAL in their title.

5.0 out of 5 stars For centuries, maybe since the beginning..., June 8, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Breath of Fire (Video Game)
For centuries, maybe since the beginning of life there has existed two factions of dragon clans (the light dragon clan and the dark dragon clan) and a goddess named Tyre (Who is imprisoned by the lights dragon clan for evil acts against the world). The goddess Tyre is a twisted, sick and evil goddess who enjoys war, death and pain and will support any race, clan or creed that promotes such acts. The light dragons fought the goddess Tyre and the dark dragons and banished her and virtually destroyed the dark dragon clan and for a very long time peace was established. During the long time of peace the light dragons who had once possessed such power for the good had weakened to the point were they no longer had any power because they didn't need to use it. Recently dark dragons reformed by their new leader, regained their strength and numbers over the years and set forth a pledge of death to the light dragons, the release of the goddess Tyre and finally the conquering of the world.

You find yourself in a dream visioning a great silver dragon who beckons you wake up before you burn to death,(the person who is speaking is actually an elderly woman) you awake to find your house is on fire and the dark dragon clan has begun its assault against the light dragons! The dark dragon clan is under the assumption that the light dragons still wield the power of dragons and must die first if they are to succeed in conquering the world! Now your journey begins! fulfill your destiny hero! The light dragons and the world need your help!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have title for any RPG fan!!, June 17, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Breath of Fire (Video Game)
This game is an early, yet excellent installment to RPG's as we know them today. Use your strength, magic, and a variety of weapons and armor to battle your way through the world and rid it of monsters. Along the way, meet new companions that will aid you on your quest. Build your characters stats and prepare for war with the dark dragon clan!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another gem of the SNES RPG era., January 22, 2009
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Breath of Fire (Video Game)
Many kids who grew up in the 90's would agree that it was a decade for entertainment on many angles. For RPG buffs, the 90's bore many classics, and the first game in a series called Breath of Fire was just one of them. Released in 1993, it was one of Capcom's first attempts at an RPG series, and it wasn't a bad one at that.

GRAPHICS: The sprites are colorful and rather fluid, but other than that it's your average SNES graphics.

MUSIC: Nothing memorable, really, but nothing bad. I do dig the dungeon music, though.

STORY: BOF's storyline is simple but pretty intriguing just the same time. In a world filled with humans and other humanoid creatures, the Dark Dragons are trying to resurrect the goddess Tyr, and it's up to the Light Dragon, Ryu, along with other colorful characters, to try to stop them and rescue Ryu's sister, Sara, who was kidnapped by Emperor Zog's henchman, Jade.

GAMEPLAY: It's turn-based of course, so it's similar to many RPG's at the time. But it has its own twists, such as each character having their own ability outside of battle. Ryu can fish, Bo can walk through forests, Karn can fuse with other party members, and more. Each enemy has their own HP bar, while the bosses have one, also, but most have an invisible HP bar once the first is depleted. When you die, you go back to the last save point with everything with you, but your money is halved. You can store it in a bank to prevent that, along with items. What's cool about the fight system is that you can switch party members in the middle of the battle, and characters not in the battle will still level up.

There is one thing I don't like in this game, however, and that is the #&%##%& abbreviations! Almost every item, spell, and weapon is abbreviated, causing confusion sometimes. It was kind of unnecessary for Capcom to do that, but fortunately you can view what the items do.

BUY: This game is available for both SNES and GBA, so choose which one you like better. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Breath of Fire is an awesome RPG game with good graphics, good music, and awesome ways of fighting enemies. The person who sold it to us was very reliable, the game was in good shape, and we also received a nice thank you from the seller. I can remember reading one of the other reviews saying that this is one of the best RPGS made for Super Nintendo and I agree with that person, because this game is truly amazing. I would most definitely recommend this game.
