BREATHLESS
By Nancy Warren

Harlequin Blaze
Oct 2002

Always
aloof and seemingly underfoot, they just have no clue. The same can
be said about Sophie Morton. She gets lost doing the simplest
things.

The story takes place in Canada, starting off with Sophie getting
lost on her way back from work. She stops her car and sees what
seems to be a very large, attractive man holding up a smaller
Oriental woman. Brave Sophie makes an attempt to thwart the crime in
progress only to discover that Detective Blake Barker, the man with
the gun, was tailing a criminal suspect and she'd just botched the
biggest case the Detective had been working on for two years.

Turns out she works in a bank that's connected to a money laundering
scheme run by the criminal that Sophie 'helped' escape. It's also
coincidence that Detective Barker can't stay away from the incredibly
sexy Sophie. They even share a love of opera.

Especially hot was the scene at the opera house. I won't give
details away but not only was it sexy, it was beautifully crafted.
Nancy Warren has brought two real life characters together and given
us a story with meat.

Sensuality: Typical BLAZE line stuff. Oral, normal sex. But don't
let that fool you, the scenes are well written *g*

5.0 out of 5 stars Winner of the WordWeaving Award for Excellence, October 3, 2002
This review is from: Breathless (Harlequin Blaze, No 57) (Mass Market Paperback)
Directionally challenged Sophie Morton wanders into the wrong side of town, and witnesses a man threatening a woman with a gun. Without hesitation, she leaps out of her car, landing the suspicious man on his back on the sidewalk. Too bad she just tackled the good guy, and the bad woman escapes in Sophie's car. Worse, she not only assaulted a police officer, but she also broke his leg!

Detective Blake Barker cannot help being bowled over by the bodacious woman. Such a hellcat holds his attention, especially when he realizes she might be remotely connected to his case. Further, Sophie's knack for losing her way and blundering into trouble, whether she is disarming a cop or discovering a blackmail scheme, arouses his interest. And her love for opera promises shared passion both in bed and out.

Author Nancy Warren pens a fast romp of erotic sensuality, blackmail and fraud in BREATHLESS. Blake careens between offense and intrigue with Sophie. This hero proves himself as a strong alpha male who wants to protect Sophie from danger, even as he needs her cooperation in his investigation...both professionally and personally. His arrogant, highhanded aggressiveness annoys Sophie while their shared lust drives them both crazy. Sophie is a refreshingly modern woman who enjoys her sensuality with exuberance; indeed, she is the bold, daring lover most women often fantasize of becoming. Further, her boldness extends beyond the bedroom whether she is assaulting a cop or simply stating her mind. Readers will find themselves breathless but satisfied with this marvelously fun novel. BREATHLESS earns the WordWeaving Award for Excellence.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story!, February 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Breathless (Kindle Edition)
Nancy has done an amazing job with the development of her characters in 'Breathless', the story's plot, and the numerous tantalizing yet romantic scenes( especially the opera scene). This was a GREAT read and was worth every penny. It had me enthralled from the very first sentence in Chapter One to the last at the book's conclusion. Sophie's final retort on her being directionally-challenged was so apropos. I just loved it! Kudos Nancy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Klutz Conked the Cop, then Stole his Heart, February 5, 2010
This review is from: Breathless (Harlequin Blaze, No 57) (Mass Market Paperback)
Sophie Morton makes a wrong turn on her way to work and ends up in a seedy Vancouver neighborhood where she sees a man with a gun pointed at a woman. Thinking it's an assault in progress, she races to the attack and breaks the guy's leg as the poor woman flees, in Sophie's car. Unknown to Sophie, who perhaps should have minded her own business, the man was a cop, the woman a crook and now she's out a car.

Blake Barker had been working undercover and had been about to arrest a e female gang member, but now he's got a broken leg and Sophie. However, as luck would have it, the interfering - and very attractive - woman works at the bank that is part of a drug-smuggling and money-laundering investigation he is working on. Then someone who works at the bank is murdered and it appears that the killer believes Sophie knows more than she is letting on, and now apparently she's become a target and who does she have to turn to for help? You guessed it, the undercover cop with the broken leg, Blake Barker.

Blake goes undercover at the bank, but in order to make his arrest, he has to rely on Sophie's help. Then the killer gets a little too close and Sophie seeks shelter in Blake's home. And that's a recipe for, well you know what it's a recipe for.

Nancy Warren is known for turning out witty and well plotted stories and she doesn't disappoint here. You can rest assured in Ms. Warren's name is on the book, it will be a terrific and worthwhile read. She, Ms. Warren, gives us characters we think about long after we've closed the pages and put the book away. A day later, a week, longer, you'll be getting a few chuckles here and there and, if you're like me, you'll want to read this one again, and again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Storyline from publisher., June 25, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Breathless (Harlequin Blaze, No 57) (Mass Market Paperback)
Sophie Morton knows she's in big trouble when she botches a bust for a sexy detective. But getting arrested is the least of her worries. Detective Blake Barker has decided to go undercover to end a money-laundering scheme at the bank where she works. So much for never seeing him again! Now her bedtime fantasies have become daytime fantasies. And it's taking all her willpower not to give in . . .

Blake isn't sure whether he should curse or thank the day he met Sophie. The blond bombshell is a huge distraction, but he can't stay away from her. She keeps telling him she doesn't sleep with co-workers, but rules were made to be broken. Her life's in danger, and Blake's determined to protect her. So what if that means staying close to her perfect body day and night? A job's a job, and he's not letting this gorgeous woman out of his sight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathless is great!, February 4, 2003
This review is from: Breathless (Harlequin Blaze, No 57) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book has a fresh viewpoint! I was so relieved that this wasn't another cop on leave, never love again, partner dead, carry all the guilt typecast! The characters were presented in new, believeable ways. I was surprised several times by how the story turned...it didn't fit into any of the "usual" plots. Great book for a rainy day. Well written, funny, smart, developed plot and lovable characters!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable - 4 1/2 stars, February 9, 2004

This review is from: Breathless (Harlequin Blaze, No 57) (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the way Sophie had a history of loving to have sex. I get a little tired of reading about beautiful women who never seem to have a good sexual experience until they meet the hero of the book. That has always struck me as very unrealistic. The plot of this book was a bit more interesting than most books of this type but the ending was too rushed and not well thought out. I only took off half a star though because you read these stories for the "blaze" and I think this book delivers it!
