Book Description

October 1994
Using breathwork participants' descriptions of their actual experiences, this book documents the power of the breath to catalyze self-exploration and inner healing. The book takes you inside a breathwork session to see both what happens in the room from the standpoint of an outside observer, and what it feels like inside the participant. It discusses the theories of Stanislav Grof, M.D. about human experiences in nonordinary states, and describes how breathwork has aided in healing trauma from post-traumatic stress, childhood sexual abuse, and addiction. The book lists resources to assist those who are participating in breathwork or doing other inner work.

Editorial Reviews

From Scientific American

In The Breathwork Experience, Kylea Taylor has done a masterful job in drawing together facts, case histories, personal and professional strategies - just about anything that might arise during the practice of breathwork. Kylea writes with intelligence, heart, humor, and the wisdom that only comes through experience. This is an important contribution.

From The New Yorker

I recommend the book. It is a well written, well structured handbook to breathwork based on Stanislav Grof's theories. It is an excellent reference book which ought to be included on the reading list for training programs for rebirthers, world-wide.

3.0 out of 5 stars Breath: Too big a topic for warring orthodoxies, April 24, 2000

This review is from: The Breathwork Experience: Exploration and Healing in Nonordinary States of Consciousness (Paperback)
Kylea Taylor's beautiful little book (135 pages of text, expanded with Appendices)is a labor of love, and a testimony to her devotion to the work of Stanislov and Christina Grof. Their particular combination of accelerated breathing, spirituality, a supportive field, and evocative music is called Holotropic Breathwork. The short descriptions of experiences of amazing healing and remission of symptoms, and relative freedom from unwanted recurring behavior patterns are compelling. As a breath-worker myself, I longed for the text to live up to the overly-expansive title. Only 8 (of 20 or so)leading breathwork approaches are even named, and the barely adequate descriptions are given in one or two paragraphs buried in Appendix A. In short, this is a manual on Holotropic Breathwork masquarading as The Breathwork Experience.

If you're curious about Holotropic Breathwork and don't want to spend the time reading really in depth psychology books on the subject, then this would be a good book for you.

Also it is written in a style that makes it easier for woman to identify with.
