Book Description

This is the first compilation dealing with all breccias to be made in 70 years, and the first such compilation ever to appear in book form. Bridging the gap between the established divisions of petrology and metallogeny, its approach is original and non-conventional. It emphasizes facts rather than hypotheses and has a large body of data based on international literature and worldwide coverage. There are four thematic indexes, 323 figures (incorporating 460 original photographs) and over 1000 references.

In almost 850 pages, Professor Laznicka reviews all coarse fragmental rocks of all origins in all associations, regardless of the established petrographic division, and based on a new, rational organisation. Emphasizing breccias and focussing on related metallic ore accumulations, the book stresses empirical facts and has a considerable breadth so that it is particularly suitable for identification and interpretation of local breccia occurrences. Metallic mineralizations are treated in the framework of breccia (or fragmentite) forming/containing environment or association. This has a practical application in exploration for ores.

The book is a must for practicing geologists working in the field or in the laboratory, providing them with a most comprehensive state-of-the-art volume against which to judge and compare most coarse fragmental aggregate and breccia occurrences in a local area. It will also be an indispensable reference for students and researchers in economic geology.

Editorial Reviews

Review

E. Scheibner
Professor Laznicka has to be commended for compiling this comprehensive book. He fills an important gap overlapping several fields of earth sciences (petrography, sedimentary and igneous petrology, volcanology, etc.) with an ever-present emphasis on metallogeny and formation of ore deposits....According to the author: "The book is aimed at practising field and exploration geologists, students and research geologists to provide them with a standard against which to judge and interpret most coarse fragmental aggregates and breccia occurrences in a local area. Special treatment is given to affiliated metallic accumulations". I think the author has achieved the aim which he set himself.... In general, this book is close to the present concensus on all subjects discussed and by presenting such a wealth of facts it will be a valuable reference book on coarse fragmentites, especially breccias, for many years to come. It is strongly recommended to all those earth scientists who are involved in field observations during exploration, geological mapping and research.
Ore Geology Reviews
J. Winchester
It is only when a major reference book such as "Breccias and Coarse Fragmentites" is published that the previous lack of such an essential reference becomes apparent..... this is the first major reference volume to concentrate on the entire range of fragmentites. As such it creates a different perspective on many of the documented occurrences, and it is this aspect of the book which make sit a most important addition to the available reference works....In summary, there is something in this book for most geologists. The classification schemes may be used by undergraduates, but the main appeal is to postgraduates and professional geologists. Minor faults in presentation cannot detract from the value of this book as an essential and encyclopaedic reference work on fragmentites of different types.
Earth-Science Reviews
B. Lehmann
For the economic geologist it provides overwhelming evidence for the eminent role of permeability in ore formation... For those exploration geologists still having any doubts about the importance of breccia zones, the book will provide first aid.
