Editorial Reviews

In each episode we will select one or two dogs that serve as our main guides through the colorful world of purebreds. Through interviews with owners, trainers, judges, breeders and veterinarians, we will explore the development of a "top dog".

In this episode of Breed All About It, we travel with Ferrel Miller and his pointer, Miller's True Spirit, to The National Field Trial Championships in Grand Junction, Tennessee. This is the super bowl of Field Trials for a bird dog and it has been held at the historic Ames Plantation for over one hundred years! Ferrel has been training pointers for over 30 years and shares some of his training tips with us.

Not all pointers are trained to hunt birds, however, some are trained to hunt humans and other animals. We meet Debra Schadt, a dog trainer from New Jersey. She is one of the only people in the country to use pointers for search and rescue. Debra and her dogs, Juda and Calista, demonstrate the art of ground and air scent tracking. We also travel to an ostrich farm as Debra recounts the tale of her dog, Grace, tracking and locating ten baby ostriches who had escaped from their home.

We also portray the pointer as a show dog. Laurie Shroyer raises champion show pointers and she tells us about the breed's gentle nature and love of affection.
