5.0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is one of the best books I have ever read... right up there with Tailchaser's Song, by Tad Williams. It is almost the same, except the humans are coming back to the planet they destroyed. The animals have become smarter because of the pollution, though, and they don't approve of the "demons" that are coming to Earth. This book is full of adventure. I...

A postapocalyptic style story. In the far future, humans are no longer. Cats, dogs etc. have evolved, and are the dominant species on the planet. These aren't your average useless feline, but do have some intelligence.

They have legends and mythology, especially of demons e.g. humans. So, of course, some of these come back.

5.0 out of 5 stars On Earth in the future, humans are returning., March 14, 1999

This review is from: Breed To Come (Paperback)
This book is a "must read" for S.F. fans and any cat or dog people. The premise isn't as far out as most of the latest S.F. stories, and does tie in with current environmental concerns. If it tells one anything, I read this book many years ago, and still remember it vividly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cats as humans are alright, February 2, 2002

I would have to disagree with the last reviewer. True, the cats and other mutated animals are pretty much like people, but that makes them easy to identify with... and since when was fantasy/scifi real anyhow? The storyline is very tight, and Norton does a wonderful job of painting the picture of an original and unique future earth - one unlike anything I've read anywhere else. Not a deep book, but that's not her style. One of her better works in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it..., October 26, 1997
This review is from: Breed To Come (Paperback)
Long after the dreaded WWIII, humans have finally returned to the earth they destroyed. The animals, however, had to live there. Something magic in the air, i guess, but our 'domesticated' animals developed greater size, sentience, and culture. Rats, Cats, Dogs, and Pigs vie for supremacy in a world reborn, wondering what secrets lie hidden in the ruins of the cities.
Do they remember humans? Oh yes. They remember the Demons who tried to kill the world, and they're not exactly happy to see them return.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent example of Norton at her best, June 17, 2008
This review is from: Breed To Come (Paperback)
This is not a story about cats, but about "the People" who are evolving from cats, rather than from apes. As usual, Norton gets into the interior mind of the main characters and allows you to understand their thought processes as well as their actions. "The People" are currently undergoing further evolution, with some of them having psi powers, hands very close to human, walking upright most of the time, etc. These changes are occurring in direct relation to proximity to radiation sources left behind by the fleeing humans. (The same radiation which was harmful to humans was beneficial to the animals that remained: cats, dogs, boars and rats (the bad guys.)

During the course of this story, a small group of humans arrives to explore the possibility of returning. (They have created yet another catastrophe on their new home world.) Unfortunately for them, inimical forces hostile to human mental health prevent that possibility.

I found myself quite immersed in the main character, Fertig, and enjoyed sharing his adventures and his viewpoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite novel., December 8, 2010

I had been looking for this book again ever since I read it in the 5th grade. I couldn't remember the author or the title, but about a week ago, I searched for it again on google using some key terms I hadn't tried before. As you may be able to tell, I found it. I now am the proud owner of my own copy of this amazing book.

This book really got me thinking about the world around me, even at such a young age, and it helped shape the opinions I still hold today. I would recommend it to anyone who likes books about the future, or just likes nature in general, this book is amazing, so go read it.

Sorry for being so vague, but I think this is a book you should discover for yourself.

1.0 out of 5 stars I've had it with "evil humans, wonderful nature" sf, June 26, 2009
By
This review is from: Breed to Come (Paperback)
When I was in high school, I loved this book. But then, back then, I wrote high school science fiction in which humans were evil and bad, and the Earth was better off without them. That is the whole point of this book. There's nothing at all of any interest in the mutated-Cat culture of the future other than how they deal with the evil Human race that has returned after a looooong absence - only to begin to wreak havoc and devastation yet again.

I'm heartily sick of such stories, now that I'm an adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Very good., February 6, 2003
This review is from: Breed To Come (Paperback)
This is such a good book.I'm almost done, but I was just aching to write a review on it.Norton uses things that I've never seen before in Sci Fi.Cats, rats, dogs, and others have evolved. The Demons (as the cats call humans)have died out ,for they destroyed eachother .We do not like to think it,but that is one of the possibilities of mankind's fate.Synopsis:The Demons have died out,but races are still at war ,not serious war ,but still war.The cave of Gammage is discraced, for Gammage uses the materials of the Demons.Furtig ,Gammage's great great grandson goes to learn from him.As he is learning of the tools of the Demons ,there comes a day when Furtig sees a Demon spaceship landing .They must fight them.
