5.0 out of 5 stars Think you know Dismantled?, May 13, 2005
This review is from: Breed to Death (Audio CD)
Think again. He was just teasing us up until now. Gary Zon has awakened his music potential with this EP. More dancey, more catchy, and more poppish beats.

Don't get me wrong, I love both the self titled debut album and Post Nuclear, but this style much more fits Gary's music and he almost seems more comfortable here and able to let go better.

THE NEW SONGS:

01. Breed To Death

((wait until you hear the last minute of the song, thats when it all clicks))

02. War Dream

((more typical Dismantled stuff, by the end of the song you will have to wonder what exactly Gary's lyrics mean in this one))

03. Straight Up

((an electronic Paula Abdul cover? yep. and its damn good too))

04. The Blind

((an instrumental that helps reflect to you what you just got done listening to.. which by the way is one kick ass EP))

THE REMIXES:

The breed To Death remixes are surprizingly outnumbered by The Swarm remixes on this EP. Both BTD remixes are super cool, but The Swarm remixes tend to make this EP get repitive. They could have subtacted one or two of them in place for a remix of a different track.

ALL IN ALL:

You need this CD, especially if you're a Dismantled/industrial fan. This EP is the beginning of Gary's success. Wait and see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dismantled's Best Work To Date, July 10, 2005

This review is from: Breed to Death (Audio CD)
Dismantled, the brainchild of one Gary Zon, is one of those elektro artists that seems to be perpetually on the verge of something major. Despite achieving critical acclaim on previous outings, Dismantled has never quite battled to the forefront of the scene. Perhaps that will all change with the release of the upcoming Standard Issue; this precursor EP should give us some insight. The EP contains a full 10 tracks. There are 3 mixes of the title track, 4 of "The Swarm" from Post-Nuclear, original songs "War Dream" and "The Blind", and a humorous cover of Paula Abdul's "Straight Up".

The EP leads off with the original version of "Breed to Death" and you could argue that it's also the best... it's definitely the most danceable. The lyrics of this song are not only catchy but they reveal a true sense of anxiety toward people in his everyday life. The "Xian feed Antkow Remix" cranks the pace up but stays in a similar vein to the original. Psyclon 9 twists the vox a lot adding even more rage, yet the synthpop confections layered on top keep things oddly light and infectiously groovy. Of the 4 different interpretations of "The Swarm", Gary's own "Easy to Swallow" version is likely the most accessible and clubby. The Haujobb totally dismantles the track; it's impressive in it's brutal simplicity stripping the vocals down to the basic repetition of the phrase "on and off" backed by a mega-distorted machine assault. Rudy of :wumpscut: slows down his mix, often allowing Zon's vocals to stand out in front, adding in some background snarls of his own and tossing in a new sample or 2 here and there. Daedal's version is chaotic shifting from calm minimalism to a hyper-fast breakbeat through the chorus. New track "The Blind" is basic 4-on-the-floor EBM, but "War Dream" is a single in its own right with its clever percussion and sly chorus. What industrial EP is complete without a steamy Paula Abdul cover? Well nearly all of them I suppose but this rocks pretty well. Funny stuff.

If this teaser EP is any indication, Gary has stepped it up and is ready to move on up to that deluxe apartment in the sky. You'll be anxious to hear the album after taking this in.
