Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

A first of its kind! Now you have all the information you need to start a breed rescue program. Learn how to: get organized; find, train and manage volunteers; gain financial support; network with shelters and other rescue groups; find the dogs; screen dogs for medical problems; determine the dog’s temperament and behavior; place rescued dogs; and publicize your program. Plus, important contacts and addresses, and sample documents that will help your organization and keep you organized.

From the Author

Much information has been available for rescuers for years, but it tends to be scattered among the various rescue programs and, in some cases, is difficult to obtain. The Internet and World Wide Web provide excellent resources for rescuers, but, of course, not all rescuers are "on line." I have tried to make this book the resource I needed as new situations cropped up. I hope I have succeeded. Sheila Webster Boneham, Ph.D. Founder, Labrador Retriever Rescue if Indiana, Inc. Volunteer, Aussie Rescue and Placement Helpline

More About the Author

Award-winning author Sheila W. Boneham has been writing and playing with furry and feathered friends since before she can remember. She grew up with a wide variety of animals, including Chihuahuas, a Scottish Deerhound, a rescued Irish Wolfhound, two Miniature Schnauzers, a number of mixed breed dogs, cats of many colors, horses, birds, and a couple of hamsters. As an adult she has added Australian Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers to her "life list." In addition to her own dogs, Sheila has fostered many rescued dogs and a few cats, and helped found two rescue programs. A strong advocate of responsible breeding as well, Sheila has bred highly successful Australian Shepherds under the kennel name "Perennial." Sheila trains and competes in several canine sports, and her dogs have also served as therapy dogs in schools, hospitals, libraries, and nursing homes. Teddy, Jay, and Lily have even modeled for commercial products and for art classes and workshops.

Several of Sheila's books have been named best in their categories by the Dog Writers Association of America and the Cat Writers Association. Sheila's first fiction publication, a short mystery featuring - you guessed it, a dog! - appears in Racing Can Be Murder, an anthology published by Speed City Sisters in Crime.

Sheila Boneham holds a doctorate in folklore from Indiana University, and taught for some 20 years at universities in the U.S. and Middle East (and yes, she brought a dog home from one of her overseas jaunts). She currently teaches classes and workshops on writing and on pet ownership and rescue.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best possible guide to starting a rescue program., November 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Breed Rescue: How to Start and Run a Successful Program (Paperback)
Breed Rescue is an excellent source for anyone wishing to start a rescue or even small rescues looking for ideas. Early chapters tell you how to get organized, where to find volunteers, and how to get and manage funds. Then you learn where to find the dogs, how to handle health screening, use foster care, and adopt the dogs to the correct homes. Also covered are how to get and use publicity and to take advantage of all the Internet has to offer. Sample forms are included, and sprinkled throughout are pictures of rescued dogs.

So to all of you out there who really think you could set up and run a rescue program, I urge you to start with Sheila Boneham's book. It is the best possible guide I have found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breed Rescue, May 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Breed Rescue: How to Start and Run a Successful Program (Paperback)
After being involved with Breed Rescue for close to a year, I then found this book on breed rescue. It is well organized, succinct and, in my opinion, complete. There is so much to consider with rescue that it is easy to get lost in the activities. I am now recommending the book to others who want to become involved. To be well informed and have each person in rescue with a sense of the same goal and way of doing things helps enormously. Many thanks to the author who took the time to put together such a wonderful reference. I still refer to it from time to time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers every aspect including getting organized, July 5, 2001
This review is from: Breed Rescue: How to Start and Run a Successful Program (Paperback)
Sheila Boneham's Breed Rescue: How To Start And Run A Successful Program is a complete and thoroughly "user friendly" guide to launching and operating a dog breed rescue. Boneham covers every aspect including getting organized; finding, training and managing volunteers; acquiring financial and community support; networking with other animal shelters and rescue groups; finding the dogs; screening dogs for medical problems; determining a dog's temperament and behavior; placing rescued dogs; and promoting/publicizing the dog rescue program. Breed Rescue also provides lists of contact names and addresses, as well as extensive collection of pertinent sample documents. If you see a need for rescuing dogs in your community but no current resources for addressing the problem, then begin with a careful reading of Sheila Boneham's Breed Rescue!
