5.0 out of 5 stars "How to" for the novice beagle breeder, August 25, 2005
This review is from: Breeding Better Beagles (Paperback)
Finally we have a book dedicated to the breeding of working beagles! A guide for the Beagler who intends to direct his efforts toward breeding Beagles as they were originally intended - as hunting partners - specialists in finding and accounting for game.

Many breeding programs fail because they are based on limited or errroneous facts concerning the dogs listed in the sire and dam's pedigrees. Even more breeding efforts are unsuccessful because the director of the operation lacks the fundamental knowledge of genetics and reproduction. Many of these hurdles for the serious breeder can be overcome by the intelligent application of the information found in this book.

The most important step in formulating a successful breeding program is the first one; this is when the Beagler commits to his program whatever extra time, effort, and knowledge that might be necessary to breed quality hunting hounds instead of just reproducing average or below average dogs. This is no small commitment. For the true breeder this is a planned, life-long journey based upon sound genetic principles, with each step bringing him closer to an unattainable goal. This book can serve as a valuable resource, and at times be a guiding light for those planning to embark on that journey.

Don Rahe, Top Gun Beagles, Cincinnati, Ohio (review on back panel of book)

From the Preface:

This book is intended to be a "how to" book for the novice beagle breeder. That is not to say, however, that the more experienced kennel owner will not find useful information within these pages. In fact, this manual incorporates most of the pertinent facts that are needed to operate a successful breeding program, but it is written in simple, step by step, straightforward language.

Oh, there may be an occasional "side trip" into a momentary exploration, or a "timeout" taken for the purpose of illustrating a point. There may even be a brief stint of reminiscing about the past now and then, but these diversions will not be long, and they will be related to the topic at hand.
