Lots of great photos, but lacking any real good information., December 8, 1998

This review is from: Breeding and Keeping Snakes (Hardcover)
This book is full of really nice photography, but trys to include too many species and therefore doesn't give any complete accounts of any particular species. As we all know, all snakes are different and we cannot be too general in our husbandry. This book was not for anyone seriously interested in breeding.

Decent Book, July 21, 2011
This review is from: Breeding and Keeping Snakes (Hardcover)
I've had this book for many years and I often refer to it when I need to double check something.
As a young inexperienced herper, this book was extremely valuable. It gave me information that helped me rethink the way I kept reptiles, that had previously been based on seeing what other amateur reptile keepers did, and on unreliable online caresheets. It was great to be able to apprentice myself to this experienced keeper through this book and greatly increase my knowledge on keeping, without having to make the mistakes myself, at the cost of my animals lives.
It is a great book in that it gives a good overview of Snake keeping.
If you are only interested in one or two types of snakes (ie. only corns or ball pythons), rather go buy a book on them.
But if you are a big breeder or an excitable hobbyist, then this is a great book.
Don't think of it as a complete guide to keeping snakes, but more information and experience of a veteran keepers put to paper.
The book has a lot of interesting and practical information, like what to look for when buying a new snake, a very well explained section on general snake genetics, what sorts of things one should consider when preparing snakes for mating, some ideas on how to build your own incubator and rearing the young snakes after they hatch.
I would recommend it to any serious hobbyist, and especially to less experienced hobbyists.
