5.0 out of 5 stars A most impressive work for complete support of dam & litter.
This amazing book dedicated for the first-time potential breeder, fascinates and informs as well, active fanciers with years of experience in the field. This serious work is very well illustrated with appropriate photographs and is interjected with a marvelous sense of humor through numerous illustrations. 1.0 out of 5 stars Can I get My Money Back??
I found the author's views on early puppy socialization to be wrongheaded and even dangerous. With a large potentially aggressive breed the responsble breeder begins handling pups AT BIRTH. The daily frequent contact with pups enables them to handle stress and bond with humans from the beginning of life. It is a very poor breeder who does not handle those babies every day...

This amazing book dedicated for the first-time potential breeder, fascinates and informs as well, active fanciers with years of experience in the field. This serious work is very well illustrated with appropriate photographs and is interjected with a marvelous sense of humor through numerous illustrations. The book includes not just the ideal experiences, but also the "what if ..." occurrences. The chapters proceed in a logical progression. Included is an extensive glossary of terminology. The indexing by individual subject or problem is a complete referral. This piece of artistry painted with words has saved the lives of innumerable dams and offspring. Even the most experienced breeders are now whelping their litters "by The Book"! This rarity in the realm of dogs and breeding is destined to become a classic in its own time and beyond.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breeding A Litter by Beth Harris, January 25, 2000
This review is from: Breeding a Litter: The Complete Book of Prenatal and Postnatal Care (Howell reference books) (Hardcover)
Beth's book is comprehensive yet basic. It will take the novice through the fundamentals step by step, including everything from: choosing sires/dams, how to assist with mating, building a whelping box, diseases, genetics, and more. Legal contract examples are provided as well.

As a breeder of Brittanys, we have found this book to simply outstanding.

I found the author's views on early puppy socialization to be wrongheaded and even dangerous. With a large potentially aggressive breed the responsble breeder begins handling pups AT BIRTH. The daily frequent contact with pups enables them to handle stress and bond with humans from the beginning of life. It is a very poor breeder who does not handle those babies every day or even several times a day. Cutting nails, etc. begins later but holding, cuddles, breathing on, petting must happen at once. Worst book I've ever read on breeding and puppy socialization!

Breeding A Litter

If you ever plan on breeding a litter or even if you have one by mistake, this book has some valuable information.

I breed toy poodles and have found this book very useful. Along with advice from a good veterinarian, some background information on genetics, and a solid understanding of the AKC breed standards and you should be ready to go.
It's not easy and it may take a lot of work, and there is definitely no money in it, but if you're truly trying to Improve the breed it can be a lot of fun.

Highly recommended for anyone who breeds a litter.

Good book, but there are better ones or at least easier to identify the different important steps in each stage of whelping and post-natal care.

This book was written 1n 1993.... even though the basics remain the same, there are other books on the subjet like the ones written by Myra Savant-Harris that are 100% more updated.

This book was helpful, but I didn't feel like it went into detail enough on problems that a bitch might have while whelping, and what the trouble signs are to look for.
