5.0 out of 5 stars Always a place in my heart
Of all the stories my father read to me as a child, this was my favorite. Its endearing story of self-discovery is timeless, and not to mention quite humorous for a six year old boy. It reminds me of a time far less complicated and will thus always hold a special place of affection for me. This was the Catcher in the Rye of my Elementary years. I would highly...

The illustrations and text aren't very compelling, and neither my nieces nor I are very interested in this book. We'll swap it away soon.

I would highly recommend this to anyone with children looking for quite simply a flat out good story to read them that they will enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tale, December 9, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The Breman Town Musicians is a simple story that involves setting goals and team work. It has two things that children love, music and animals. What a combination!

As a 17 year childcare veteran, I highly recommmend this book. Kids today can use all the inspiration they can get. A great way to learn is to read. I read this book to my daughter when she was a child. Now I am getting a new copy for my grand daughter.

My children and grandchidren love this story. I bought the book to read to my youngest grandchild, who is 2 and a half. We love both the story and the pictures. We also have fun braying, barking, meowing and crowing like the heroic animals in the story. When her dad was her age we lived in Germany and visited Bremen and saw the statue of the animals.

A Kid's Review
The animals were going to Bremen Town to be musicians because the owners were going to kill them. On the way to Bremen Town, they met some robbers. The animals stole a house from the robbers.
I liked this book because the robbers looked funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Retelling of the Timeless Fable, October 20, 2010
This review is from: The Bremen Town Musicians (Picture Yearling Book) (Paperback)
This is a faithful retelling of the Brothers Grimm's timeless fable about four elderly animals who, upon learning of their impending demise, set out together to make their way in the world. They come upon a house of robbers in the woods and, by confronting and frightening them, gain the house for themselves and live together happily for the rest of their lives. The climax of the story, in which the robbers read their own fears into the animals' behavior and run away, brings a satisfying return for the robbers' evil behavior while allowing the animals to retire in peace.

Ilse Plume's retelling is evocative and interesting, and while her pleasant illustrations are a little old-fashioned, they are of high enough quality to have earned a Caldecott Honor in 1981. There are probably better retellings of this story available, but this one is a good choice. It's appropriate for a preschool and elementary audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Visit to Bremen, November 4, 2008

After a recent visit to Bremen in Germany, and souvenir t-shirts for the grandkids, I decided to purchase copies of the "Bremen Town Musicians" as Christmas presents. I am very pleased with my purchase. I am impressed with the quality of English used, which would surely be of benefit to young ears. Also, the text included some lesser-used words such as 'hound, lute, minstrels', great for vocabulary building. Young minds absorb so much, so let us give them worthwhile things to soak up. The text also lends itself to reading aloud with lots of expression and drama, always enjoyed by children. The illustrations are simple but superb, plentiful and complements the text beautifully - a great help for young readers. I can't wait to read to them on Christmas Day!

Some animals were going to Bremen Town to be musicians. On the way they saw some robbers. They kicked them out and the animals never went to Bremen-Town.
The donkey kicked the robber with his hind legs, that is why I liked the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars We Like This Version Just Fine!, March 5, 2011

While this differs from the Grimm version, my daughters, who always love a good story, very much enjoy this one. At first I wasn't sure how they would react to how the animals' owners wanted to do away with them, but it was presented in such a way that they weren't bothered by it and instead saw a hopeful outcome. It is a retelling, certainly, and sad parts of the original tale are omitted. My 4-year old asks to be read this one every night--and knows it by heart. She delights in how the animals join forces to get rid of the bad guys! Young children will like this book.
