This review is from: Bret Harte's Gold Rush (Paperback)
This is a great collection of Harte's stories, culled from all three periods in his career - California, New York and Europe. Like Dickens, his characters are memorable and his stories realistic. He writes from experience, showing a real flair for detail. His characters are memorable because they are human - exhibiting all the frailties and foibles of human nature. The plots are tight; the average length of a story is about twelve pages, so it's easy to read a few stories in one sitting. These are not typical western tales, though - no gun play or hostile tribes, so don't expect a lot of action.
