Customer Reviews

Do not buy it for any reason.

We use this to pasteurize our wort, and it is just a nice, easy to read, easy to clip on the side of your pot, little thermometer.

This is great for homebrewing a batch, especially for steeping grains.

This is exactly what I have been looking for. the dial is big enough for an old guy like me (with poor close up vision) to read and the extra long probe goes almost to the bottom of my brew kettle and still stays clipped to the side of the pot. Shipping was done in a reasonable amount of time. All in all, nothing to complain about. I'm off to start another IPA.

Does what it is supposed to. I use this for homebrewing, and it is very responsive. The clip on the body is useful, and the long stem is ideal for larger batches.

Nothing wrong with the thermometer itself but it is not calibrated and goes out of calibration easily. Do yourself a favor and buy a digital one that can be calibrated in a bowl of ice water at 32 degrees. You will never use an analog type one again.

I needed to get away from my glass thermometer when brewing and this thermometer is perfect for my system. I put it in boiling water to calibrate and it read 210 on the nose (I'm at a bit of elevation, so the boiling point is lower). It seems sturdy and well made and the numbers are easy to read.

I use this for brewing. This is great because it it requires no batterries, is long enough to reach the liquid at any level, and has the full range of temperatures that I need.

I was interested in this thermometer because it was perfectly designed for working in my 8 gallon kettle, allowing easy access to the liquid to the various water heating activities (strike and sparge). I guess I assumed too much, but after failing two separate batches, I decided to check the calibration of this device. To my surprise it was 10degF low at the temperature range I expected to use this the most (145-175 degF). I realize that the thermometer can be calibrated by adjusting the small nut on the bottom of the housing, but if I have to check it every time with a reference digital thermometer, it makes no sense to use this in the first place. It can be adjusted, but it is too easy for the thermometer to loose calibration.

My plan is to replace with a nice digital thermometer with a nice long lead. This will be great for mashing, but unfortunately, is not as optimal for the water heating phase due to the risk of lead damage from the heat generated from the propane burners. I may put some heat resistant material around the lead to solve this problem.

My old digital thermometer I used for my wort broke and digital timers are expensive, so I thought I'd go with this because it's cheaper & since it's an "official" brewing thermometer, it'd work just fine.

I put this in my kettle when I first turned on the heat and read inaccurately. I know traditional timers are slower than digital, so I gave it like 30 minutes. It read my kettle was at 150° when I knew it was way hotter. Luckily, my wife nagged me to buy a replacement digital thermometer for when we cook meat. I threw that in and it immediately read 175°! That sounded right. I gave it some more time and once the digital read 212° the wort starting boiling, perfectly on cue! This thermometer read 180°. I was blown away about how worthless this thing is!! I brewed another beer just yesterday and the same thing happened again.

I thought I'd save money by not buying a digital thermometer, but ended up wasting money because this is so slow & inaccurate. Trust me, spend the extra $10 and get a digital.
