Book Description

November 1, 2011
Fine wine has always had its expert guides to taste and terroir. Why not beer? Funky, young, and smart, this is the ultimate beer geek's companion, covering everything from the homebrew renaissance to nanobreweries to many of America's preeminent beer events and festivals.

There's a revolution brewing among craft beer makers: They're reviving long-forgotten recipes, dosing brews with wild yeasts to create new flavors, and using organic grains and hops to forge a delicious new frontier of beer. And no one's better equipped to tell us what's happening than Joshua M. Bernstein, former Gourmet.com writer and one of the world's foremost beer experts.  He covers all of today's top trends, including high-alcohol, bourbon barrel-aged, cask-conditioned, and even gluten-free beers.

Designed to look just like Joshua's notebook and featuring labels and photos, this extreme guide is a one-stop shop for cutting-edge beer technology, taste, and information.

Review

Praise for Brewed Awakening:

“Joshua M. Bernstein's Brewed Awakening shines a spotlight on the variety, ingenuity, and innovation that is alive and well in the beer community. Over the past decade, the collective renaissance of beer and brewing has proven that this is the best time in history to be a beer drinker. Brewed Awakening is a great look behind the curtain of the beers that are making this revolution so great.” —Ken Grossman, Founder, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.

Brewed Awakening does an excellent job of immersing the reader right into the heart of what craft beer is all about. Hardcore beer geeks and newcomers to the craft beer revolution alike will find a wealth of fascinating, and fascinatingly cool, information on every page.” —Greg Koch, CEO and cofounder, Stone Brewing Co.

Brewed Awakening has something for every beer lover, but I think it is most ideal for upping the beer IQ of those just entering our ranks. It demystifies the brewing process and the international craft brewing movement.” —Sam Calagione, president and founder, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery

5.0 out of 5 stars A great inside look at the state-of-the-art October 23, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'd been tipped off to this book from a few beer cognoscienti and pub owners here in NYC and am glad I got in on the ground-floor of its release.

It's well-thought out and written, highlighting the stars and best talent of the craft-beer industry today. I consider myself to be somewhat of a connoisseur and I totally agree with the author's picks of the beers to try in each category. Pretty awesome the way the outside cover folds out to reveal a poster of the best of the best!

To boot it's well art-directed and a pleasure to read. You'll tear through it in one weekend (like I did). 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brewed Awakening October 24, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Brewed Awakening is a great book for those just becoming acquainted to the craft beer movement and experienced beer drinkers alike. For someone who prides herself on knowing a lot about beer, I now realize that I was largely unaware of a ton of neat facts about beer (and its ingredients, brewing processes, notable brewers...the list goes on). I also really like the fact that the book looks into international beers/breweries, as I'm really only familiar with US brews.

The author's writing style is very engaging and I really appreciate the layout. There are lots of cool pictures and recommendations on a lot of beers and new styles that I hope to try some time! I definitely recommend this book and plan on picking another up one as a stocking stuffer for the holidays.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and Awesome September 5, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Ever passed by the beer aisle and been drawn to the little-known, but mystical sounding, names and labels? Too afraid to give it a try? Check this book out so you can get a great introduction to craft beer. The author has done his research (what a hard life) and it shows in the product. He doesn't dumb everything down, but he doesn't try to make you feel like an idiot. I feel like this is a great introduction to the movement toward great tasting, unique, regional beers. At the end of each chapter a list of must-tastes are included, giving you a good start to your tasting trek. Toward the end there is a handy glossary and event list so you can check out your local peddlers.

Highly recommend as a gift to any student who will be attending Chico State. It discusses Sierra Nevada and makes you feel proud to live so close to such a badass brewery. And yes, most of us do graduate as beer snobs.
