Product Description

From the Manufacturer

If there can be one horse and one race that defines the sport of Thoroughbred racing, the horse would be the world-famous Secretariat and the race would be his win of the 1973 Belmont Stakes. Listed on two Athletes of the Century lists (#35 on ESPN's list and in the Top Ten of Time Magazine's list), Triple Crown winner Secretariat, owned by Meadow Stables, was a true athlete and champion.

Product Description

If there can be one horse and one race that defines the sport of Thoroughbred racing, that horse would be the world-famous Secretariat, and the race would be his win at the 1973 Belmont Stakes. Listed on two "Athletes of the Century" lists (#35 on ESPN's list and in the Top Ten of Time Magazine's list), Triple Crown winner Secretariat, owned by Meadow Stables, was a true athlete and champion. The world has yet to see another Belmont win of 31 lengths, such as he did in 1973, and there has yet to be a Thoroughbred that breaks his 1973 Kentucky Derby record of 1:59 2/5.

Carefully sculpted by talented artists and hand-painted, this stunning re-creation of Secretariat is durable enough for play, yet exquisite enough to inspire a collection. Horse measures approximately 11" x 9".

4.0 out of 5 stars Secretariat: the greatest race horse of all time, May 24, 2005

I have a working hypothesis that people really fall in love with a horse only once in their life. Maybe it is because they read "Black Beauty" or "My Friend Flicka," see "National Velvet" or "The Black Stallion," or get caught up in the excitement about a Seabiscuit or a Smarty Jones. My first horse was Secretariat and each year my favorite part of the Kentucky Derby is when they post the race record of 1:59-2/5, the only horse ever to run the 1-1/4 miles in under two minutes even though it has been three decades since Big Red won the race for the Roses.

In 1973 it had been over two decades since Citation had won the Triple Crown and the sport of horse racing was in trouble. Then came Secretariat, a beautiful chestnut colt with a white star on his forehead. The son of Bold Ruler out of the Princequillo mare Somethingroyal, Secretariat combined the speed of his sire with the stamina of his dam's side. The horse was bred and owned by Meadow Stable, whose Riva Ridge had won the 1972 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. As a two year old Secretariat won the Sanford Stakes at Saratoga, the Hopeful Stakes, Belmont Futurity, Laurel Futurity, and Garden State Stakes to win seven of nine races and become only the third two-year-old to be named Horse of the Year, following Native Dancer in 1952 and the filly Moccasin in 1965.

As a three year old Secretariat won the Bay Shore and Gotham Stakes, before finishing a disappointed third at the Wood Memorial on April 20, but still entered the Kentucky Derby as 3-to-2 favorite and on the first Saturday in May won the Derby by 2-1/2 lengths over Sham with jockey Ron Turcotte aboard. In the Preakness Stakes the results were the same: a 2-1/2 length victory over Sham in a time of 1:54-2/5 for the 1-3/16 miles. Only four horses showed up for the Belmont Stakes on June 9 and Secretariat and Sham engaged in a six-furlong duel clocked at 1:09-4/5, an unbelievable pace. Sham would finish last and never race again, but Secretariat, running by himself, won the race by 31 lengths, an all-time record, and running the 1-1/2 miles in 2:24 to beat the track record by 2-3/5 seconds. My favorite memory in horse racing is the television camera pulling back as far as possible only to find it could not keep both Secretariat and any of the other horses in the same frame. As Secretariat came down the straight away there was no doubt he was the greatest race horse of all time.

This Breyer figure of Secretariat show Big Red without his familiar blue and white checkered racing colors, so you can see all of this horse, because in addition to being the fastest horse of all time I think he was the most beautiful. I think the coloring on this figure is pretty good, and my only real complaint is that the muscles on the front foreleg should be smoother (but what do I really know about horse flesh, right?). The figure measures approximately 11 x 19 inches and while it is durable enough to play with, it really is intended as more of a display figure. Of course, Breyer has long cornered the market on horse figures and you can probably find your favorite horse because they have every one from Bucephalus and Trigger to Seabiscuit and My Friend Flicka.

Secretariat retired to Claiborne Farm, where he sired a number of talented horses but never one who could match his speed. Secretariat died of complications from laminitis on October 4, 1989 where an autopsy revealed a heart almost twice the size of that of a normal horse. When they said Secretariat had more heart than any other horse, they were not kidding.

I've actually had this piece for quite a while, it's an older mold than the Seattle Slew or Affirmed models. While the detail and coloration are not quite as good as that of the more recent models, I still love my Big Red and he will stand proudly for all time on the shelf next to Slew and Affirmed.
