5.0 out of 5 stars The best book I ever read!
This is the best book I ever read. At our high school we have to read a book over the summer. This was the book assigned to my grade level, and I read it in 4 hours, and I hate to read. That is how good this book is.

One black and the other white. One is from one part of the country the other from another part. One is shy the other one is outgoing. Those are some major characteristics about the 2 main characters in the book Brian's song. As u can see their total opposites but they managed a way to be best friends. This story is not allot about football as much as it is and the two...

I love this book, because it is great! This book is one of my most favourite books that I have ever read. It narrates a real story about a truthful friendship between two men, who are from different races, have different personalities and come from different places in USA, but become best friends like brothers. The story of the book carries the theme that a true friendship always takes place in the hearts of people even with many diffences that exist.

Brian Piccolo is a white man; he is a very easygoing person and likes to talk a alot. Gale Sayers is a black man and is a very shy person. They both meet while playing for an American football team, the Chicago Bears.

As life goes on the playing fields, their friendship starts by playing some practicle jokes on each other, but with the problems that come up, they become best friends. This great friendship comes to a sad tragedy at the end! I burst into tears at the end, because it is such a heart-moving, great story.

Even though I don't know much about American football, I really enjoyed reading this book alot. I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone. This book will definitely capture the hearts of people who read it.

The story shows real friendship between two different people with many differences. The two go beyond race and personality differences. You see this when the two help eachother when Gale is hurt and when Brian is sick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brian's Song, February 2, 2001
This review is from: Brian's Song (Screenplay) (Mass Market Paperback)
I was fortunate to watch the movie it's first airing on ABC. I was 6 years old. It has ever since been my favorite. Brian's story and love of life has sustained me through several football injuries and especially the injury that would cut my football career short.

When two men have what Gale Sayers and Brian Piccolo shared we can only sit back in awe. They were able to come from different parts of the country and in a time when it was not acceptable for white and black men to share such a close friendship, they were able to show so much devotion to one another. Gale Sayers showed that a man could proclaimed his love and friendship on the night that should be for him when he was awarded the NFL's Most Courageous Player. This is much more than a football story, it is a story of life ... as well as death.

Those are some major characteristics about the 2 main characters in the book Brian's song. As u can see their total opposites but they managed a way to be best friends. This story is not allot about football as much as it is and the two characters stories. Unfortunately Brian is diagnosed with leukemia and is hospitalized till he gets better. Showing their great friendship gale was with Brian every second he possibly could and was always next to his hospital bed. Well that's my review read the book to find out more.

I thought I would despise this book since, after all, it was about football, and I HATE sports. But, I loved it after all! Read it and learn about REAL friendship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, Moving Tale, July 27, 2011
This review is from: Brian's Song (Screenplay) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a basic, easy-reading, yet very good story about a brave NFL player struck down in the prime of life. We learn about Brian Piccolo's Florida upbringing and college days at Wake Forest (where he once lead the nation in rushing), then his short career as running back for the Chicago Bears from 1965-1969. Piccolo wasn't blessed with great size, speed or talent, but his grit and determination helped shape him into a pretty good NFL player. We also learn about both his family and his strong friendship with star performer Gayle Sayers, an interracial relationship even more uncommon in the 1960's than today. Finally we proceed to his final struggle, one he waged with the same admirable courage and determination that he displayed on the playing field. Piccolo also kept his sense of humor - after receiving a blood transfusion from Sayers, he told his friend of a newfound craving for chitlins. Sadly, Piccolo (1943-1970) couldn't block his final opponent, but his inspiring example (and the attendant publicity) led to a fund in his name which has helped others survive the testicular cancer that felled him.

As a kid I watched the outstanding made-for-tv film Brian's Song with my dad, a movie that sportscaster Howard Cosell admitted made him weep. These pages make sad but inspiring reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Teaching High School Seniors, August 29, 2010

I teach in a medical magnet program for high schoolers interested in careers in the medical field. I plan to use this screenplay in my medical literature class as a) an example of a screenplay, and b) a foundation for discussions about caring for the terminally ill.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brian's Song, January 10, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Brian's Song (Screenplay) (Mass Market Paperback)
Brian's Song

The book I read was Brian's Song it is about a man named Brian Piccilo and Gayle Sayers, and they both play for the Bears. Gayle is a new player on the team and Brian has been they're. When Gayle gets to camp Brian shows him around and everything. The only problem is that they both play running back so that means one will be ahead of the other, and it is Gayle he is the starter.
Gayle and Brian get to be very close friends almost like brothers they do everything with each other. Then Gayle is in a game where they are beating the other team very badly and he breaks his leg when he should have been on the sidelines. So that means Brian is the starter now. After Gayle gets back from his injury they start to split time, but Gayle even says himself he would have never made it back without Brian.
Then the coach recognizes something wrong with Brian so he tells Brian to take a break from the team for a while. So then Brian goes to the Doctor and he is diagnosed with Brain Cancer. They have a surgery and get rid of the tumor, but it comes back and everyone is so depressed that it came back after he lost it. That next week Brian stays in the hospital and....................

I liked this book a lot because I like sports and football. I think that it is a sad story especially for Gayle because he has lost his best friend.
