Book Description

August 11, 2004
When it opened in 1902, Briarcliff Lodge was AmericaÂ’s premier resort hotel. Located some thirty miles north of New York City, this magnificent Tudor-style building was surrounded by dairy barns and greenhouses, all built by Walter Law, "the laird of Briarcliff Manor." Here, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt were hosted, as were Tallulah Bankhead, Johnny Weissmuller, Jimmy Walker, Babe Ruth, and other luminaries. The hotel business declined in the 1930s, here and at other nearby resorts, but Briarcliff Lodge continued in use as the home of the Edgewood Park School from 1936 to 1954 and as the KingÂ’s College from 1955 to 1994.

About the Author

Rob Yasinsac is a lifelong Westchester County resident who documents neglected historic sites throughout the Hudson Valley in an attempt to save them. He works for Historic Hudson Valley, serves as a trustee on the boards of the Westchester County and Irvington Historical Societies, and is a member of numerous other historical organizations. With photographs from the Briarcliff Manor–Scarborough Historical Society, the Westchester County Historical Society, and private collections including his own, Briarcliff Lodge is a record of a New York landmark that disappeared from the landscape in a spectacular fire in September 2003.

4.0 out of 5 stars great book for a local, January 10, 2007
This review is from: Briarcliff Lodge (NY) (Images of America) (Mass Market Paperback)
i grew up with the briarcliff lodge in my back yard and was saddened to see it perish. reading this book, seeing the pics from the glory days and the later pics from just before the building came down, brings the same sentiment as when i view images of the titanic...
somewhere in a parallel universe, the titanic is docking in the new york harbor and it's passangers eagerly await their transfer to the train that will take them up the hudson river to holiday at the briarcliff lodge...
ps: watch re-runs of 'the wonder years' when it's dad's birthday and he's mad at big sister for moving-in with her boyfriend. the name of the restaurant where they go for his dinner is 'the briarcliff lodge.' who is the local resident who must have written for the show and tucked that into the story?

5.0 out of 5 stars Briarcliff Lodge, March 5, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Briarcliff Lodge (NY) (Images of America) (Mass Market Paperback)
As a person who grew up in the shadow of this historic structure I found it to be very interesting. There is even a picture of the house I was born in on page 67. It brought back so many memories. Nostalgia so thick you could cut it with a knife !
