SEMI-HARDBOILED,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
"The Bribe" is an M.G.M. noir--which means that it's a pretty posh-looking affair compared to the threadbare efforts of R.K.O. or Universal, and even looks richer than a Paramount or a Fox film noir. It featured two of M.G.M.s top attractions--Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner--so it's also a more romantic noir than one might expect it to be. (Hint: Ava is the bribe.)
But "The Bribe" is based on a story by Frederick Nebel, one of the genuine lesser masters of the hardboiled style, and for that reason alone would be worth the watching. As is, "The Bribe" is a top-flight lesser noir. Coming as it did after the noir mold had begun to jell, it offers few surprises. Robert Taylor is the saavy G-Man who is not immune to Ava's charms. Vincent Price offers another up of his noir villains as a thoroughly corrupt war profiteer. (At this point in his career, even when Price was on the side of the angels--playing the D.A. in "Leave Her to Heaven, for instance--he could be pretty unpleasant.) The film's surprise, if there is one, is Charles Laughton's turn as Price's cowardly flunkey. John Hodiak rounded out the cast as Gardner's alcoholic, ex-hero husband. The pleasures of "The Bribe" are those of watching an established formula expertly executed. All of the ingredients are there, and the results are the expected ones. (The director of note on the film was Robert Z. Leonard, an old M.G.M. hand going back to the 1930s, but the dazzling climax--the one thing in the film that you're most likely to remember--was reputedly directed by Vincente Minnelli.)

The Bribe,

Very rare movie from the late 40s with beautiful Ava Gardner and tough Robert Taylor (but always in the shadow of Clark Gable). Only Charles Laughton as smeary villain tops them all. A high time thriller of a long forgotten black and white past of Hollywood movies

A steamy, predictable noir,

This review is from: The Bribe (DVD)
A top cast in an enjoyable tropical noir with all the one liners and cliches. The romantic angle between Taylor and Gardner limps a little but this is well compensated by Laughton's excellent performance as the fat man 'who sweats a lot'. Period style of the 40's required the men to wear jackets and ties, and you feel sorry for the poor souls sweating in the humid tropical heat. Despite a weak story line, it is a gem for noir lovers.
