Book Description

Avon Romantic Treasure October 1, 2002
A Reluctant Bride

The king has decreed that his loyal servant, Lord Alex de Monteneau, will rule the Lady Talia's lands and determine whom the fiery maiden will wed. The groom he chooses, however, will certainly not be himself, for the noble knight desires a far richer castle and a docile wife -- not this infuriating, iron-willed beauty who resists his authority at every turn. Yet the woman's charm, strength, and smoldering sensuality are rapidly becoming a serious distraction.

In the past, Lady Talia has managed to save her humble ancestral castle -- and her virtue -- from numerous self-proclaimed "husbands." But the unnervingly attractive warrior who had "rescued" her from yet another unwanted wedding seems the most dangerous of the lot. No man will ever decide her future! But how can Talia hope to retain her cherished independence when she secretly, passionately longs for Alex to share her bed?

From Publishers Weekly

Through tight plotting and dynamic characterizations, Needham (My Wicked Earl) portrays the plight of the 12th-century female in this sweet yet simple offering. Lady Talia resides at Carrisford Castle, which, unfortunately, is a strategic prize in King Stephen's endless wars. Six warlords have ravished it while trying to take flame-haired Talia to the altar by force, and each time, she has evaded marriage and gotten away with it-until Alex de Monteneau rides in proclaiming to be her new guardian and lord. Her first act is to hit Alex over the head, and her first words are that she will never marry him. Sparks flare quickly between the combatant pair, especially when Alex tries to force Talia to marry a man of his choosing. Predictably, he falls for the fiery termagant himself, but war stands between them, a war that Talia hopes to escape and which Alex, the King's man, cannot avoid. Needham's characterizations are inconsistent at times-as when King Stephen, sounding like a modern-day aristocrat, says, "Blazes, Alex! You've done a right fine job with this castle." Still, there's no denying that this breezy romance is full of charm, verve and lovable characters.

About the Author

I've leaned heavily toward the dramatic from my earliest childhood, when I forced my neighborhood friends to act out every movie I saw. Of course, I insisted on being director, costumer, star, and all-around bossy person. At the ripe old age of six. I organized my first parade and led a straggling band of eight equally young victim up one side of our block and down the other, carrying a proudly crayoned banner that read "The Parade of California." I'm still bossy, but now I direct it toward my characters, who accept my brilliant dramatic guidance -- most of the time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Does Harriet Klausner Dislike ANY Book?, June 2, 2006
This review is from: The Bride Bed (Avon Romantic Treasure) (Mass Market Paperback)
Honestly, how Harriet Klausner can give this book 4 stars is beyond me; but this seems to be her basic pattern, no matter how good or bad the book, she seems to rate them all well. Which doesn't help readers who want an unbiased, realistic review from someone we want to trust.

The hero, Alexander de Monteneau was perfect in my opinion, but his heroine wasn't. He deserved a better woman and a more interesting story. She wasn't happy with her lot in life, which was understandable, but Alex was pretty much on her side only she was too obnoxious to realize it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Had Such Potential...., June 2, 2006
This review is from: The Bride Bed (Avon Romantic Treasure) (Mass Market Paperback)
Alex was the only interesting thing about this book, but even he wasn't enough to carry this dull tale to its conclusion. And Talia wasn't a very good heroine. She was smart enough, but so bratty in other ways; too childish for Alex.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uninteresting...., May 31, 2006
By
This review is from: The Bride Bed (Avon Romantic Treasure) (Mass Market Paperback)
I find it appalling that a man can gain ownership of a woman and her home at a king's command - but that being said, it was the way of things and based on that I will say that Talia should have been damned grateful to Alex for rescuing her from Rufus. Alex was hero material all the way and yet she was petulant at every turn. Didn't make for a happy story, but a dull one.
