1.0 out of 5 stars BORING!!!!!, August 6, 2000
By A Customer
I read about 3 books a week and this is positively one of the worst I have read in a long time. It is inane and the dialogue is too childish. I got so tired of all the "mayhaps". I really think I could have done better in a book report for high school credits. I am glad I got this from my sister so it didn't cost me anything. I usually only write good comments about the books I have read but I didn't want 4 stars to give someone the wrong impression.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed this book, July 27, 2000
By A Customer
I actually liked this book. I laughed when Winsome wanted to use a piece of the sail from Brands boat for a dress and when she painted pictures on his ship in red. It was fun to watch them both try to understand each other. I ended up buying other Theresa Scott books once I finished this one. Now I'll have to find her older ones as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very slow moving, and not much character development or romance, January 23, 2007
By Gemma "bookworm" (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
From the back cover:

To beautiful, ebony-haired Winsome, the tall blond stranger who had taken her captive seemed an entirely different breed of male from the men of her tribe. Though Brand treated her gently, his ways were nothing like the customs of her people. She had been taught that a man and a maiden might no join together until elaborate courting rituals were performed, but when Brand crushed her against his hard, muscled body, it was only too clear that he had no intention of waiting for anything. Weak with wanting, Winsome longed to surrender, but she would insist on a wedding ceremony first. When Brand finally claimed her innocence, she would be the bride of his heart, as well as a bride of desire.

And my review:

My first try of Theresa Scott's work, and probably my last. I'm afraid that I was too bored to even finish this book.

The plot was very slow-moving. The reader had to slog through pages and pages before anything really happened. And even when something did happen, it usually had nothing to do with romance. I read romance for the relationship between hero and heroine, not for a million other little subplots.

I really didn't like how the author used just about everybody's thoughts to write this story. Everybody, even a bystander, would get their thoughts read, until the story was very hard to follow. There were so many unnecessary details thrown in, as if to "pad" the book and make it longer. I just never felt like I was reading a romance novel. It felt more like I was reading a historical fiction novel that happened to have some sex thrown in as a marketing ploy to sell the book to romance readers.

The character development was also sorely lacking. Winsome is a healer with a limp, caused by having one leg longer than the other. Brand is a big, strong Viking man with a powerful sexual appetite. Yes, but what else? I never felt like I really knew who they were, or what made them tick. Apart from lust, there didn't seem to be anything drawing them together. I need to really feel like I know the characters. I need to see why they should fall in love with each other, and it can't be just that the sex is so good. That's not enough for a satisfying read.

There are far better historical romances (that actually focus on the romance) out there. I'm afraid that I can't recommend this one.
