Book Description

Author Veronica Bale’s debut novel, Bride of Dunloch, is a gripping story of love and conflict in the time of the first Scottish War of Independence, and of one young girl’s struggle to determine for herself what is right and what is wrong.

In the watery grey light of a late spring dawn, two forces meet to oppose one another at the main gate of Dunloch Castle, an imposing structure nestled deep in the Scottish Highlands. On the attacking side are the MacGillivrays—a clan dispossessed of its ancestral lands and home because its members would not swear loyalty to the English King Edward the First. Dunloch is theirs, and they will take it back—by any means necessary.

So is the world in which Jane Sewell, a young and naive English girl of noble birth whose hand has been given away in marriage, finds herself. It is a land that is as bloody and brutal as it is beautiful. But when she stumbles upon a wounded Scottish warrior from the enemy MacGillivray clan, her compassionate nature will not allow her to abandon him. Against her better judgement, she resolves to help him in secret.

As tensions at Dunloch intensify, however, Jane finds herself torn between her duty—and her heart. For in these Scottish Highlands, loyalties can change as quickly as the weather ...

5.0 out of 5 stars trilogy that is worth it October 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I don't always want to start trilogies or series because if the writing is not done well, I am reluctant to finish but am still curious about the ending. But this trilogy is worth it! It is more of a novella in length, but the writing is done so well the story seems complete. It doesn't feel like it moves too fast as some shorter books do. The H and h are likable characters that I would enjoy reading more about. The secondary charactesrs are drawn well, and even the "villain" is not a straightforward evil caricature. I can't wait for the second book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I expected October 4, 2012

This is the first romance novel I've read. A friend of mine recommended this novel to me and I'm glad she did. I felt connected with the characters and the plot was engaging. Thankfully it's a trilogy because I didn't want to stop reading. Can't wait for further works from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bride of Dunloch September 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A beautiful and evocative love story. The characters are believable, and they grab at your heart-strings. The romance itself is truly a falling-in-love, not the battle-of-the-sexes that ends in a wedding, like most other romance novels. Nothing's wrong with the battle, but it's refreshing to just see a male character who's not afraid to be tender. You cannot help but wish for a happy ending for these two souls when all the circumstances are against them. If you love a good historical romance, this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Wait for Volume 2! September 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the story of a young girl's awakening to the travesties in the world. Although a romance, this book is full of the historical conflict surrounding the Scottish and English people. The main character, Jane, is English. She goes into the story a naive young woman who carries all the stereotypes anyone in her day would have about the Scotts. The man she eventually becomes attracted to (a Scott) carries similar stereotypes about the English. Both learn to love and respect each other and to see the beauty in each other's peoples.

Yet the story carries the foreboding of trouble throughout. First, Jane is married to a cruel man who is three times her age. He is the ultimate villain. Next Jane falls in love with her husband's bitter enemy. The opposing clans are at war. We now have a Romeo and Juliet set up. The author takes us from scene to scene and as a reader I was worried both about Jane and about her new love, Robbie.

Told in historical context the author has clearly done a great deal of research. The dialogue is typical of the time with the Scott's dialect present but not a distraction.

I was left wanting more. What other way is there to leave readers at the end of Volume 1?

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable read October 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
When a friend recommended I read this book, I had some doubts as, in the past, I have not found historical romance novels of much interest. I was most pleasantly surprised as this book was not only well presented but also well researched capturing the atmosphere and the language of the time. The characters were so well described that they sprang off the page. It is the first part of a trilogy set in the Scottish Highlands depicting the enmity and battles between Scotland and England (perhaps well timed in light of the up and coming referendum for independence). Highly erotic and beautifully written.

This is a terrifically erotic love and liberation story. I won't repeat what it is all about since this is well explained in the book description. What impressed me most was the very credible portrayal of Jane Sewell, the book's young and inexperienced protagonist - inexperienced politically and sexually. She is thrown into the midst of the conflict between the English and Scottish people. It doesn't take long and she asks herself questions about right and wrong. The answers are not too hard to find, but Jane's decisions and the consequences resulting from her decisions are what makes this book such a terrific read. The great strength of the book's heroine is her character and her willingness to take risks by doing what she thinks is right. You can't help but admire Jane, perhaps even fall in love with her. She is growing up on the pages in front of you and she is doing that in a hurry.
The book is well written. I enjoyed the language of the conversations which transported me straight into the time in which the events take place. This is how an interesting and believable historical romance novel is meant to be written.
It is the author Veronica Bale's debut novel, the first volume of a trilogy. I am sure many of her readers wait for volume two. I certainly do. I highly recommend this book. Reviewed by Fred Schäfer, author of Travelling with Maria.

The Bride of Dunloch is a well written book that readers interested in romance genera would love. The historic Scottish War of Independence has been well researched by the author evoking a sense of nostalgia in a fast paced love story. Looking forward to the sequel in the trilogy.

Five star for context, characterization and storyline. Overall four star

3.0 out of 5 stars A nice story but a little hard to believe
I found this story to be a little tiring and far fetched. Perhaps a little more action might have saved it for me, but I found myself scanning instead of reading.
