I just purchased this book on Friday and I was excited as Edith Layton would be a new author for me. I love historical romances for a number of reasons, one of the biggest reasons is because of the scintillating scandals that typically occur in most historical romance novels and the passion that is shown between the two protagonists that you can visually see growing. The book started off slow and just went down hill from there. The story starts with a man and a woman who agree to marry on the understanding that there would be no love, just money for one and social standing for the other (her family more than herself). The premise sounds great...however, they agree in the beginning to never speak of the reason between their marriage. And yet...almost every scene involved them arguing that point how she isn't good enough for him and how he was desperate for money. It just gets old and boring because a resolution is never found, they both just argue and walk away. The heroine varies from strong-willed to meek in the blink of an eye. You get excited when you think, "Oh my god, she's going to stick up for herself" only to have that hope deflated as she returns to her meekness. No passion is ever developed between them, no self monologues of either of them realizing their feelings for one another passionate or otherwise. There is no growth in their relationship at all. I ended up skimming many pages near the end. In terms of romantic scenes between the two, look forward to the first one after 200 pages and even that was disappointing and bland. Prior only chaste kisses were given. The last 15-20 pages were a little bit more interesting, but it ended in a rather abrupt manner, which really did not add to the lack of plot and story. Overall, I would not recommend this, I actually ended up returning it to the bookstore for another book since I ended up reading it in one night.

This book started off really well and I was captivated by the Ian and the predicament he found himself in. The story took a while to build, but that was alright by me. But things just never got going. There was no electricity between Hannah and Ian - it seemed like everyone was just going through their paces. Ian was patronizing had no passion, and Hannah was very weak. Sorry, but I'd give this book a miss.

I was really excited when I read the back of "A Bride for His Convenience" and couldn't wait to sink into this book. Boy, was I disappointed! Like other readers, I ended up skimming through the book after the first couple of chapters, looking to see if it would ever pick up and the answer is NO! There is absolutely no chemistry between Ian and Hannah and several times I would be reading and think, "Wait a minute! Did I miss something?" I was left absolutely clueless when they jumped from one idea to another. Example: at the end of one chapter, Ian is asking himself if he'll ever consider making love to his wife again, but in the very next chapter-with absolutely nothing to give you any clue that his feelings have changed-he's "seducing" his wife. And I say "seducing" because the love scenes were BORING! The conversation about whether or not to make love took up more sentences than the actual act, which consisted of maybe one boring paragraph. I just could not get interested in these characters! What a waste of $5.99!

Not worth the read,

In a nutshell the story was drawn out, there was no sparks or passion between the two main characters, like other readers i skimmed the pages waiting for the story to pick up...it never did.

If this book can be published, I am going to start writing Historical Romance myself so I can get published too. There is really nothing good to say about this book. It really had no plot and the H & H were just awful. This book was not at all romantic or enjoyable. That about says it all regarding this book as far as I am concerned. When you think about what we PAY for these romance books, we should be given a refund for this one. Just my honest opinion.

This book was also quite boring and not worth the time or expense. It took forever for me to finish which is never a good thing. My recommendation is to skip it and find something else to fill your time.

I'm a hardcore romance novel fan and this was positively abysmal. I hated Ian's character. I mean, c'mon! Damn your pride, man! Definitely not the smoldering, brooding, jealous type but, goodness! For a hero in the story, you'd think the author would have at least made him likable. He was just the most stuck-up, self-absorbed prick. And Ian was such a nice name too.Don't get me started on Hannah. I felt so sorry for her to be in that kind of predicament but there were just times when I felt like slapping her! So, your husband was bought for you and he doesn't love you. And the prick that he is, he's exposing you to all those horrid people of the ton. Goodness, woman! I thought you were supposed to be the outspoken, confident female protagonist not some insecure ninny! I was almost afraid there wasn't going to be an ending. And when I finally got there, I'm like 'That's it?'. That was a waste of time and printing materials. No passion, too draggy... I would say this is just as bad as Judith McNaught's "Tender Triumph" but at least her heroine was gutsy and had some semblance of character. Bottom line: Don't bother.

An Inconveniently Boring Bride and Groom,

I was so excited to pick up this book, but that excitement didn't last very long. Maybe I'm a psychic, because the first chapter kind of told me what to expect from the rest of the book. Two more boring, gutless, passionless, thoughtless, unimaginative people would be hard to find in romance.given the chance to make love to his wife of four days, this prosey bore decided it was too soon. Hunh? Their continuous conversations about why they got married didn't ring true, either. Every other historical romance I've read about that time period would lead me to believe that the money would not have been as big an issue since dowries were the thing back then, and men got to do with them whatever they wished, with no requirement of approval from the wife or her family. So, that part didn't ring true at all. fact, I am surprised that Edith Layton thought to make it such a huge issue, but since she did, it could have been done so much better, and with so much more creativity and passion. What a marvelous setup for huge emotional scenes, flame throwing and scorched sheets, and she missed the boat. I am so disappointed. In fact, this book was so poorly written in my opinion it was ghost written for her. Think about that.

What a Snooze!,
This review is from: A Bride for His Convenience (Mass Market Paperback)
I used to really like Edith Layton but her last two books have been really disappointing. This book was just boring. The main characters have absolutely no personality and practically nothing happens, plotwise. The hero is written as such a paragon that he is unreal and the heroine shifts between feisty and submissive without any reality.
