Great end to the trilogy,
This review is from: Bride of the Lamb (Paperback)
This is the final volume of Bulgakov's trilogy on 'Divine-Humanity', following the Lamb of God (Christology) and The Comforter (pneumatology) with The Bride of the Lamb (creation, anthropology, ecclesiology, and eschatology). It is the crown of his work in applying 'sophiology' to an account of Christian doctrine. He brilliantly makes the case that only a sophiological account can bring orthodox Christianity into a coherent shape in the areas of creation, freedom, and eternity. Rather than seeming like an esoteric speculation, Sophia allows Bulgakov to bring out the inner logic of the Scriptures and the deepest convictions of the Church in a wonderful and inspiring way. He exposes the Christian faith as the beautiful, tragic yet hopeful worldview that it is.
There is much here that will cause controversy and disagreement, since Bulgakov did not shrink from critiquing and correcting both Eastern and Western traditions. But this book, and this entire trilogy, is a masterpiece of true theology. Passionate yet balanced, poetic yet with a sure grasp on technical issues, confident yet with a vulnerable and gentle heart, Bulgakov's work shines with the presence of the Spirit. It is a book to break your heart and mend it. I would rate this as the finest work of systematic theology I have ever read. |
