5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite All Time Book!
My mother collected used Scottish books for me. Out of all the Scottish romance books I have read over the years this one is my absolute favorite. The history of the time in this book is spellbinding. I am fullfilling my lifetime dream of going to Scotland and decided I must read it again before I go this summer. The characters are so awesome, you never forget...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
I'm really torn on this one, as I usually love historicals with more history and less romance, but for some reason this book didn't fully deliver for me.

All the elements were certainly in place for a five star book:
- good writing style
- a writer who seemed to have a grasp of the political situation of Scotland during the early 17th century...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites! Re-read so may times !, December 27, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bride of the MacHugh (Paperback)
"Bride of the MacHugh" is one of my favorite books. I have read and re-read it so many times it is falling apart. The conflict established between the MacHughs and the Campbells is classic Scots feuding. Alex and Elspeth are well matched, both with enough arrogance and spirit to set their time and world aflame.

Danger, intrique, romance, history...this book has it all and you will not be able to put it down.. Very engaging and complex characters, you are there with them throughout the book. Set in Scotland, Elspeth Lamond is stolen from her Campbell kin to be set upon the front steps of her estraged fathers Castle. The Ward of the powerful and greedy Duke of Argyle, Elspeth is plunged into a political arena of tretchery as her Guardian will do anything to gain lands and power, Elspeth discovers herself, the family she'd never known, and the Bigger than life Laird of the MacHughs who helps her realize who she truely is. Definitely one for the bookshelf you will read it over and over again. Out of print...please look to used books on Amazon to acquire a copy...you will not be disapointed...

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful historical romance, October 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bride of the MacHugh (Paperback)
They just don't write books like this one anymore. The descriptions of Scotland's landscape are breathtaking, and provide the perfect backdrop to this story of romance and intrigue in seventeenth century Scotland.

Elspeth Lamond is the product of a union between a Lamond and a Campbell, two warring clans, and she has grown up in King James' court. She goes to Scotland because of a promise to her dying mother. Once there, she meets the MacHughs, the clan allied with her father's clan against the Campbells.

While mostly a romance, this novel also explores the political scene of the day, complete with clan warfare. If you like historical romance, you must read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bride of the MacHugh, January 4, 2000
This review is from: Bride of the MacHugh (Paperback)
Wonderful romance! I have reread BRIDE OF THE MACHUGH many times since the early 80s. I really enjoy romances where the heroine is as much a part of her destiny as the hero. All the characters in this book are marvelous with Scotland, itself, the most fascinating character. Did Ms Speas ever write anything else?

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional novel about Scotland and a wonderful love story., October 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bride of the MacHugh (Paperback)
I love novels with a long ago Scotland setting and with a love story that keeps you interested. The history of the clans, the description of the settings is wonderfully entertaining. This book was written in 1954. Why hasn't there been more novels written by this author? Who is he/she?

5.0 out of 5 stars scottish historical romance at it's best, May 31, 2005

this book is a keeper. of all the romances i've read in my life, the hero and heroine of this book are the most vivid in my memory. alex and elspeth are perfectly matched and easy to relate to. the story starts out with elspeth coming to scotland unexpectedly and being abducted by orders of the "Black MacHugh",the handsome laird of clan machugh. elspeth takes him to task for his arrogance, and a spark ignites between these two strong willed people.
jan cox speas is a wonderful story teller. she has a way of painting a picture that few authors can. you can see in your minds eye; the mountains covered in purple heather, the lochs, the same shade of cornflower blue as elspeth's eyes, the glaring red of the machugh tartan, and hear the boisterous shouts from the proud highlander's, banners flying, as they ride over the moors, through the rain, and feel the mist on your face. ok, so i got a little carried away......
ms. speas wrote this book in 1954 so the sex is more implied than in your face, which in a way is more tantilizing...........
check out her other books, "my lord monleigh", and "my love, my enemy". both worth a read as well.
also, for you ladies who like a good romance with a hunk on the cover, this is another good choice (paperback only).

This romantic historical fiction is set in old Scotland.

The two main characters will steal your heart and imagination. You will rush to know the end and be disappointed when it is finished!
