No Escape from this Engaging Emotion,

This review is from: A Bride of Narrow Escape (Paperback)
While the latter portion of the book is somewhat traditional coming-of-age and nature poetry (albeit well-written), the book starts stronger than any other book of poetry I have ever come across. Detailing loss with poise, honor, and honesty, poems like "Scour" and "A Last Cool, Sweet Thing" are the epitome of good poetry - intellectually stimulating, emotionally engaging, and unapologetically memorable. The most wonderful part is that it never seems sensational, never a poem to take advantage of experience, but to present it to the reader. It is the poetry one can respect. Even after the initially powerful poems, the tamer poems still roll along smoothly and do not drag. Poems such as "Provisions" deal with the experience of nature, but it's never just about nature. It's about experience, and wisdom. This book is as good as any on the Barnes and Noble poetry shelves. Probably better. |
