Grace Alastair is a widow determined never to marry again. After her period of mourning, she plans to go back to the convent that she grew up at and dedicate her life to helping others.

Ewan Gilroy is in need of a wife with a large dowry. Unfortunately, being born a bastard has made all of the noble families turn down his marriage proposals that is until he gets to the home of a friend. Ewan is instantly attracted to Grace and will do just about anything to get her.

Feeling guilty about the death of her husband, Grace is determined never to marry again. It doesn't matter that she is attracted to Ewan, she can't marry him. Thinking her brother is taking her back to the convent, Grace is surprised to find that Ewan is leading her escort.

Unbeknownst to Grace, Ewan is taking her back to the convent in hopes of changing her mind about the marriage. Will Ewan be able to convience Grace that marriage to him is better than life at the convent?

This story was an enjoyable read. Grace was determined to never marry again even when she would like nothing more than to have her own family. She was a strong woman that held on to her convictions and it wasn't until someone other then herself was threatened, did she give in to Ewan's marriage proposal. I also really liked Ewan strength of character. Even though he was a bastard, he made the best of his life. Through hard work, he was able to get an estate of his own. He didn't has that "woe is me" attitude because he wouldn't inherit anything from his father.

This was my first book by Basso and it definitely won't be my last!

BRIDE OF A SCOTTISH WARRIOR by Adrienne Basso tells a sweet tale of second chances. For the illegitimate son of an earl and a widow to a Scottish laird, second chances are fragile, uncertain and come at a cost. I give BRIDE OF A SCOTTISH WARRIOR three stars.

In the novel, Lady Grace Ferguson lives under a shadow after her actions hasten the death of her mortally wounded husband, the chief of Clan Ferguson. In order to escape the rivalry between his two brothers over who will lead the clan, Grace goes to live with her brother, the chief of Clan McKenna. Despite her brother’s persistent matchmaking, Grace’s remorse over her role in her husband’s passing induces her to return to the convent where she was raised and live the rest of her life in service to God. Only one thing stands in her way: Sir Ewan Gilroy, illegitimate son of an earl, knighted for his service to King Robert, and seeker of a well-dowered bride.

Sir Ewan needs a wealthy bride so he can restore the lands he’s been given by the king, but once he meets Grace, no other woman will do. He makes every effort to win her over, but still Grace is determined to return to the convent. Ultimately, Grace is faced with a situation in which she must confide all in Ewan in order to save innocent lives, and she agrees to marry him as his recompense. Little does she know that there are more challenges to their happiness than just her own baggage. Add a stereotypical mother-in-law, illness and a vengeful brother-in-law, and the newlyweds have a difficult row to sow.

Overall, I liked BRIDE OF A SCOTTISH WARRIOR. The characters were sympathetic, and I wanted them to prevail.

Bride of a Scottish Warrior is the second one I've read from her and, seriously, she has me smitten. She's a wonderful storyteller that really wraps you up in her world and transports you to another time--in this case the Scottish Highlands of the 1300s. It's just a fabulous experience. The quick of it is that Grace and Ewan have met during his quest for a wife. Something Grace has vowed she'll never be again after the tragic death of her husband. But circumstances, family and life may just have different plans for her.

Things I loved!

***The rich world--One of the things I love about Basso's writing is how rich it is. It's easy to get swept away into the time period and what's happening. It's not always an easy life but the passion, strength and determination of the people is just stunning and you really feel like you're right there with them through everything.

***A marriage of convenience--I loved both Ewan and Grace. They're amazing together. It's an arranged marriage of sorts. Or marriage of convenience. He desperately needs a wife with a large dowry to help provide for his people. And Grace needs protection and safety from a brother in law who is out to use her for his own means.

***Ewan--He's a good man who has fought hard for everything he has which now includes lands and people who have been struggling to survive and need his protection. He's been shunned most his life because he's illegitimate and he battles that to this day no matter what he's sacrificed and done. He'sstrong, honest, caring. Quit the sexy beast and one it would be easy to feel safe with. Basically. I loved him even if he was a bit blunt and had a little cocky male thing going. I loved it.

***Grace--I love Basso's heroines. They're just incredible.
