4.0 out of 5 stars A lovers' reunion you won't want to miss

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovers' reunion you won't want to miss, December 29, 2005
This review is from: The Bride With White Hair 2 (DVD)
The Bride With White Hair 2 followed quickly upon the success of the original movie, taking up the tragic story of Cho Yi-Hang (Leslie Cheung) and his forbidden love Lien Ni-Chang (Brigitte Lin). By betraying his sacred pledge that he would never doubt his beloved, Cho has unleashed a monster. Ni-Chang's fury over Cho's betrayal drives her completely mad, transforming her into the white-haired witch who lives only to destroy every living member of the Eight Clans, especially the Wu Tang clan to which Cho belongs. As for Cho, he has retreated to Mount Shin Fung, guarding over a mystical flower whose bloom (and it only blooms once every twenty years) can cleanse and restore the woman he still loves.

Ten years have passed since the deadly night that Ni-Chang went mad and almost single-handedly destroyed the Wu Tang clan. Only two members of the clan survive: Cho, who has stood guard at Mount Shin Fung under blizzard conditions all these years, and Cho's nephew Kit (Sunny Chan). With Kit's impending marriage to Lyre (Joey Maan), the opportunity to further the bloodline exists - and so it is that Ni-Chang crashes the party, kidnaps the young bride, and takes her back to her own private castle full of man-hating, deadly women. There, Lyre is indoctrinated in the witch's "See a man, kill a man" philosophy and programmed to kill Kit with her own hands.

The Eight Clans send their best warriors to try and kill the witch and rescue Lyre, but they are all almost defenseless against Ni-Chang, who uses her deadly hair as a most effective weapon (sounds weird, I know, but it works really well). It soon becomes clear that the only person who might be able to defeat the white witch is Cho Yi-Hang, and this sets the stage for a most unforgettable reunion between the two former lovers.

This sequel is a more direct, action-oriented film than the original The Bride With White Hair, and for that reason I actually found it more enjoyable on the surface. Still, though, it lacks the depth and beauty of the original, largely because the two lovers do not meet again face to face until the final scene - although that meeting is well worth the wait. Most certainly, if you've seen and enjoyed the original, you'll want to experience this sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good followup sequel, September 8, 2004

It's always hard to film a sequel to a great classic like "Bride With White Hair." I agree that the change in directors is to blame. Poor Brigitte Lin really mopes around in this film. Even in her depressed state, Brigitte is stunningly lovely. Christy Chung's role was amusing. I think the actors did their best with the script. As a huge Brigitte Lin and Leslie Cheung fan, it's still a good movie. The chemistry could have been better but remember they only had the final scenes together when their characters come face to face. It's hard to be combustible when you have approximately 10 minutes of screen time together.

A very disappointing sequel to a great Hong Kong film. A change in directors pretty much explains what happened--there is none of the creativity and originality of the first movie. Perhaps as important, Brigitte Lin and Leslie Cheung are completely misused in this film. The Lin character has become a caricature, and Cheung only appears briefly (and his only significant appearance is at the end of the film). Without the romantic sparks between these two, and missing the imagination of Director Yu, this plays out as a very tired sequel. However, a Brigitte Lin move will always be worth at least three stars to me; I also thought the Christy Chung character was amusing. The DVD version is a good transfer, the subtitles legible, and a lot of language choices. Still, one can't help but be let down after the superb first movie, which really deserved a sequel--it should have been made by Dirctor Yu, however, and used the stars that helped make the first film so compelling.

3.0 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING BAD ABOUT A SEQUEL IS HERE, April 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bride With White Hair 2 (DVD)
Unfortunate that this movie fell pray to the sequel curse. The first BRIDE showed promise, and it had that great open ending that left you waiting for the next movie to finish the story. Then, along comes BRIDE 2 and all you get is a ho-hum retread and nothing new or exciting like the first one. BRIDE 2 has its moments, but it lacks the steam and freshness that the first BRIDE had. Its worth watching, just dont get your hopes up for this to be as nearly good as the first.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful rip off!, March 17, 1999
By A Customer
After having been stunned at how amazing and engrossing the Bride With White Hair was I was equally amazed at how bad and pathetic the sequel was. The fact that Ronny Yu didn't direct it should have tipped me off, but with the main stars of the first one starring in it I thought I'd give it a chance. First off I made the mistake of renting the dubbed version. I don't know if they took liberties with the dialogue in the translation but the lines spoken are pure drivel. The action sequences and the cinematography are like a bland made-for-tv knock off of the original and the story is boring. Leslie Cheung only makes a brief appearance at the end and I began fastforwarding towards the end before I was even half way through it. If you've seen the first one, don't rent or even consider buying this one, you won't be just dissapointed, you'll be mad! Watch Ronny Yu's original masterpiece again instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, July 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bride With White Hair 2 (DVD)
While it certainly isn't up to par with its predecessor, Bride with White Hair 2 is not an awful movie. I admit that I bought the movie because of the sheer beauty of the first; and it did try its best to rectify the open ending that the original had.

The fighting scenes were bizarre and interesting to say the least, with Brigitte Lin's white hair strangling and piercing bodies all over the place, and the story was, while not terribly engaging, not tepid enough to be utterly uninteresting. While the relationship between Sunny Chan and Joey Maan is not as dynamic as that of Leslie Cheung and Brigitte Lin (hence the four stars, though I wish I could give 4.5 stars..), the young couple were somewhat convincing. Veterans, Brigitte Lin and Leslie Cheung electrifyin their wondrous renditions of the two doomed lovers. Too bad there's only a few minutes of screen time for the pair ;-(

Bride with White Hair 2 certainly is not a bad movie; living up to the original Bride with White Hair's greatness was not an easy task mind you, so the sequel did a decent job. Comparing BWWH2 with other HK wuxia flicks, this one is solid. If you want BWWH2 to give you the same mind-numbing experience that the original delivers, you're going to be in for a disappointment. Watch the movie on its own, without comparing it to the magnificence of the original.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good on its own weird merits, March 27, 2006
This review is from: The Bride With White Hair 2 (DVD)
Forget that Bridgett Lin and Leslie Cheung were the stars of the first movie and just enjoy this one for its own bizarre standards. The plotline involves the Bride kidnapping another bridge, brainwashing her into trying to kill her fiance and fighting. Lots of fighting. The fiance is helped by his grandmother (who does kung fu better than anyone) and his female friend who is jealous of the whole arrangement but loyal to a fault.

And this also has the best payoff to the requisite canto-pop montage. It was also the first time I ever laughed aloud at the "this is a work of fiction, any resemblence to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental" tag at the end.

Beyond that, Leslie Cheung and Bridgett Lin do reunite at the end and it is wonderful, but the real story ended with the first movie. This is just an excuse to get Bridgett Lin with the white hair as a lethal weapon. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well concluded sequel, April 22, 2001

For those who have seen the original - don't expect this one to focus on Bridgette Lin and Leslie Cheung. This movie stars an all new cast of young actors who manage to carry the movie pretty well. The movie focuses on what happened after the 2 star crossed lovers separate - 10 years after the original 'betrayal' and now Bridgette Lin has become a powerful but evil martial arts master who is embittered against all men. I have to admit I was disappointed that Leslie did not have a bigger part in this movie, and that they did not focus on the 2 main characters as much but the ending is one that should not be missed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very sad attempt at a sequel, May 7, 2002
I rented this film immediatley after seeing the first Bride with White Hair hoping for a fluid and entrancing continuation of the story. There was a perfect setup for a sequel and I couldn't wait to watch it unfold. After the first half an hour I knew that director Ronnie Yu had abandoned the feel of the first film and it seemed he didn't really give a damn about how interesting the story was. Poor dialogue, inadequate story, there was nothing satisfying or even interesting in this film. If you enjoyed the first BWWH you'll probably still be tempted to watch this movie just make sure you rent it before buying.
