Book Description

June 16, 2009
Something borrowed. Something blue. Do you really know the man to whom you’re saying ‘I do?’

Madison Mandelbaum is on top of the world. She’s got a loving — though totally neurotic — family, two fabulous girlfriends, and best of all, she’s head-over-heels in love with Colin Darcy, an investigative reporter for NBC, a distant relation to the Queen, and–most importantly–Maddie’s fiancé. Be careful what you wish for her mother’s always fond of saying, but with Colin on her arm, Maddie is certain that everything will finally go right.

With one week to go before the wedding, Maddie receives an anonymous email that suggests that her fiancé may not be the man she thinks he is. Is this someone’s idea of a pre-wedding joke? Yet as sinister phone calls, text messages, and disturbing clues turn up, all linking Colin to the murder of a sexy callgirl, Maddie realizes that she must get to the bottom of this. Fast.

As the clock counts down towards what was to be the ceremony of her dreams, Maddie’s life is turned into a wild race to find the truth. Between frantic dress fittings, entertaining future in-laws, and putting on a brave face, she and her best friends are propelled into an undercover investigation that plunges them into a seedy underworld of anonymous sex and backroom politics.

As her search brings her ever closer to the knowledge she desperately seeks, Maddie finds her heart being tested in ways she’s never dreamed. Determined to take back her life, she discovers just how far someone in love will go to cover up the truth. And along the way, she stumbles upon a shocking secret she never saw coming.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Goldstein (The Prince of Nantucket) delivers up a mostly smooth-sailing novel of art, murder and politics. In one week, 20-something SoHo art gallery manager Madison Mandelbaum is getting married to the man of her dreams. Then an anonymous tipster begins leaving her disturbing messages about her fiancé, journalist and transplanted Brit Colin Darcy, who, apparently, does more than the investigative reporting for which he is quickly gaining fame. Colin, in fact, may have something bigger to hide than the call girl he was possibly seeing behind Madison's back. The hooker turns up dead and Colin is a likely suspect, though he swears he had nothing to do with it. Madison, however, has her doubts, and after catching Colin in some whopping lies and getting insider information from her assistant DA best friend, she determines to uncover the truth and save her wedding day. The backdrop of the final frenzy before a wedding makes this madcap romp zippy and fun, although Madison and her pals sometimes stretch credulity a smidge too thin. (June)

Review

“In his third novel, Jan Goldstein manages to pull off a hip, zany, shivery combination of The Thin Man and Sex and the City. Don’t ask how he does it. Just hold on to the edge of your seat and read The Bride Will Keep Her Name.”
—Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean

“A fun thrill ride with lots of New York City flavor, Goldstein's third offering contains a great mix of humor, mystery and intrigue, with a healthy dose of girl power thrown in.”
Romantic Times

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Summer Read, June 23, 2009
This review is from: The Bride Will Keep Her Name: A Novel (Hardcover)
This books is a wonderful read. I am delighted that I chose this book as my first summer novel. I'm on day 3, sipping my Pina Colada on the beach in Maui, this book kept me entertained well past sunset. I am going to buy a copy for each of my girlfriends. I can see this as a movie!

2.0 out of 5 stars The plot is like a soap opera and the characters are cheesy., June 1, 2011
The plot of this book packs as many silly twists and turns into it as a week's worth of As the World Turns. The plot is perposterous and the characters are so cheesy and romanticized I felt like I was reading the script for a new Spainish soap opera. To become engrossed in this book you need to suspend your disbelief to the point of having a lobotomy.
The most positive thing about the book is that it moves fast and the chapters are short. If you are on the beach with your kids, you have lots of breaks to look up and make sure eveybody is behaving themselves, and its the kind of book where you can be interrupted a thousand times and you can still pick up right where you left off.
It's silly and parts are entertaining but it's not well written or even vaguely realistic.
