Disappointingly low-quality,
By Ariel Meadow Stallings "Author, Offbeat Bride" (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brides Behaving Badly: Wild Wedding Photos You Were Never Meant to See (Paperback)
I was excited for this book, as one of my wedding photos is in it and I very much believe the world needs more bridal comedy -- but wow, what a disappointment.
The humor is mean-spirited -- and as a proponent of non-traditional weddings, it concerns me to see how many of the brides in the book are derided for deviating from tradition. I'm certainly not offended (I refer to my wedding as a "freakfest" in my own book), but it's disconcerting to see how much of the humor in this book takes aim at nontraditional brides. The message to brides seems to be "stay demure and traditional, or else be mocked." That subjective issue aside, there's no denying the quality issues of the images. Many of the photos in the book are of distractingly low print quality -- the images have lots of digital crunchiness and blur, which can happen when low resolution photos are taken from the web. For a photo book, this image-quality issue is a serious one. I realize this is a light book intended for a gifts market, and it's definitely a fun idea -- but the execution is poor and mean-spirited, ultimately making this a disappointing gift.

Livid and horrified,
This review is from: Brides Behaving Badly: Wild Wedding Photos You Were Never Meant to See (Paperback)
When I first picked up this book I thought it would be something funny to look over with my bridesmaids. I bought a copy and took it home. As soon as I started reading it I was flabergasted. I have never seen so many mean spirited and snarky comments in my life. And what is even worse is that half of the pictures were never meant to be seen by anyone other than the bridal party.
These are pictures of people doing every day things but just happened to be caught on film. So what if a bride is smoking or drinking in her wedding dress, I am sure that millions of brides every year do these exact same thing. Also, their comments on the unusual and quirky brides are even worse. So what if someone isn't going for a traditional wedding. It is their big day and it should be everything that they dreamed of. In my oppinion, if you buy this book you have waisted your time, money and effort.

waste of money.,
This review is from: Brides Behaving Badly: Wild Wedding Photos You Were Never Meant to See (Paperback)
if I wanted to look at low resolution photos of brides doing wierd things I would save my money and stick to the internet.
What is the point of charging money for poorly written commentary and low-quality photos? The ethics of this book are right in line with girls gone wild.

Even If You Just Read It In The Store, You've Paid Too Much,
By yelahneb (seattle WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brides Behaving Badly: Wild Wedding Photos You Were Never Meant to See (Paperback)
A friend mentioned how poorly put together this book was, but I had to see for myself before passing judgment. In an effort to be thorough, I forced myself to read and absorb every single page.
It's dreadful on nearly every level. The fuzzy picture quality, the completely unnecessary, inexplicable "jokes" beneath each image, the slick, cheap feel to the pages... it's difficult to understand why they bothered. It really does give every appearance of someone having collected low-resolution images from random places on the internet, and then printing them out at the corner photocopy store. The problem isn't that the humor is 'lowbrow' - it's barely even there. You can easily find better funny elsewhere, for free. I agree with an earlier reviewer - the initial swarm of positive reviews that appeared for this book don't seem to be based in reality. It would be one thing if they'd given it a few stars, and said, "yeah, it's pretty funny" - but they went overboard (all of them), and once you've had a look at the goods, the deception is painfully transparent. Kudos to them for possibly trying to help out a friend, but better friends would have helped them not make a crappy book.

Why?,
This review is from: Brides Behaving Badly: Wild Wedding Photos You Were Never Meant to See (Paperback)
Why be mean and snarky about women on their wedding day? So they did it differently than you would have done? SO WHAT! They are expressing who they are and their personalities. Good for them. It doesn't make them monsters. The wedding industrial complex that says all of us brides need to conform to the bashful, blushing bride stereotype is crazy nonsense.
I guess the authors are expressing who they are as well. Liars for not informing people correctly about what the pictures would be used for. Cheap for using pictures off the Internet! Mean for bashing people for their individualism! Come on, grow up. Thankfully, I don't have to buy this book and support their nonsense. The "monster" brides weren't hurting any one, but these authors sure are.

Poor quality - returned the book rather than give as a gift,

I bought this book as a funny gift for a friend's bridal shower, but the quality was so terrible (many pictures are low-res, and the pages feel weird, as stated in previous posts) that I returned it. Even if it weren't such low quality, it's the type of book you flip through once and are done with anyway. Not worth the money at all.

I'm giving the authors one star for being resourceful enough to ask their friends to write reviews for their book, but I'm docking them because the reviews are obviously fake -- all written on the same date and all by people who've never written reviews before? Maybe next time you'll be more careful about trying to drum up fake reviews for your work, which obviously can't stand on its own anyway.

Don't buy this book unless you're some sort of creepy white taffeta obsessed male supremacist. What a waste of beautiful trees!

I believe the publishers of this book have a series of books in a lighthearted vein. I've looked at them before with my teenage son. However, when I saw and looked at this book (thankfully I did NOT give them any of my hard earned cash and neither should you) I wondered....I wondered if they had to ask people if they could use their photos....and if so.....did they promoted it incorrectly...did they perhaps steal photos off the open internet...etc.
A lot of the books photo's...I've seen them before online. There were quite a few pages (over half?) that I just didn't even get. As if someone's sense of humor is poorly off. My son kept asking me "what does that mean?" and I was struggling to explain at all because I truly didn't know and just eventually gave up and said, "I don't know...I think someone had too much to drink before putting this book together." I will say that the other books in that series are about ...dogs...and TV..etc.....and they were not and still are not mean spirited. So why would they take that route with this book? There was nothing funny about this book. I found the entire thing to be utterly stupid. Save your money for something fun. The notion that there are people that will tell you different is very sad to me. I could have even dealt with the book if it was funny as someone's expense for the sake of humor. But it's rude and still not ...FUNNY.

Waste of paper,
This review is from: Brides Behaving Badly: Wild Wedding Photos You Were Never Meant to See (Paperback)
It's mean-spirited, unfunny, and bad quality (both writing and taste). Many of the pictures aren't even of brides...did the authors just flip through Flickr without differentiating between the "Halloween" and "wedding" tags?
Overall: Printing this book was a waste of paper, and buying it hoping for a laugh (or even a smile) is a waste of time. |
