This review is from: The Brides of Dracula (Paperback)
Dean Owen's novelization of the Jimmy Sangster/Peter Bryan/Edward Percy screenplay is very far removed from the actual on-screen story which starred Peter Cushing as hero Dr. Van Helsing and David Peel as vampire Baron Meinster. Owen invents a sexual relationship between Lee (that's Van Helsing's first name in this novel) and the heroinne, Marianne Daniel, which borders on what could be considered pornography (remember, this was 1960) and later he destroys the vampire Baron by having Van Helsing perform a psuedo-exorcism in which a horde of vampire bats attack Meinster as punishment for violating the Code of the Undead which prohibits the taking of his mother's blood (incest, you say?) and failing to turn Marianne into a vampire with his first attack on her. That finale was later used by producer/writer Anthony Hinds for the attack on the cult of vampires at the conclusion of 1962's "Kiss of the Vampire". The special effects budget for 1960's film version of "Brides" was smaller and the British censor wouldn't allow for such a graphic demise. Any "Brides" fan who knows that is THE minor classic in the Hammer vampire/Dracula series should collect this paperback treasure before it truly disappears.
