5.0 out of 5 stars Wilson At Her Best
With "The Bride's Protector," Gayle Wilson delivers a great tale that should satisfy romance and mainstream readers alike. 3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a nonstarter for me
I was really disappointed with this book, The Bride's Protector by Gayle Wilson. I've read some of the more recent Men of Mystery/Phoenix Brotherhood books and liked them, so I thought I'd give this one a try (The cheesy illustration didn't help my impression, but that's neither here nor there). The writing in this book reminded me of how I would think of older-style...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wilson At Her Best, April 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bride's Protector (Men Of Mystery) (Harlequin Intrigue, No. 509) (Paperback)
With "The Bride's Protector," Gayle Wilson delivers a great tale that should satisfy romance and mainstream readers alike. A renegade CIA operative and a witness to murder are on the run from impossible odds, and readers are lucky enough to be taken along for the ride. I was swept up in Hawk and Tyler's story from page one. It's a beautifully constructed novel, as Wilson manages to juggle a complex story, two strong characters, and a lot of suspense and passion with surprising ease. By the end, I was amazed by just how much ground she was able to cover in 250 pages. The suspense tale is frighteningly realistic enough to please anyone who loves espionage-type stories and contains both a compelling dilemma and enough twists to keep readers guessing. Meanwhile, romance readers won't be disappointed by a love story that is both passionate and ultimately poignant (LOVED the last scene in the house in Covington).

"The Bride's Protector" strikes the perfect balance between story, character, romance and suspense. If this is any indication of the next two books in her "Men of Mystery" series, we're in for a treat. This ranks right up with "Only a Whisper" and "Whisper My Love" as Wilson's top efforts-as well as easily being the best Intrigue so far this year. A must-read.

4.0 out of 5 stars She hit all her marks, January 3, 2000

This review is from: Bride's Protector (Men Of Mystery) (Harlequin Intrigue, No. 509) (Paperback)
I enjoyed the book. Ms. Wilson made sure there were no holes in her plot, I appreciate that respect for the reader. The hero and heroine came just shy of touching my heart though. It's a pity because after the intro, I really wanted to know them better. But instead I followed their mystery to their happily ever after without being convinced that these two deserved to (and would) beat the odds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced suspense with sizzling romance., April 4, 1999
This review is from: Bride's Protector (Men Of Mystery) (Harlequin Intrigue, No. 509) (Paperback)
The Bride's Protector is a roller coaster ride of danger and passion. Tyler Stewart is running for her life and Lucas Hawkins is the man to save her. This is an exciting and fast read with two wonderfully flawed characters, and passion that can sizzle the pages. An absolute must read!

CHARACTERS! MOST EXCELLENT
Griffon Cabot, head of External Security Team, assassinated.
Lucas "Hawk" Hawkins, extra-ordinary expert sniper.
Jake Holt, expert on gathering information. [where is his story].
Jordan Cross, secret CIA agent and member of Cabot's special team.
Carl Steiner, now head of the Team but can he be trusted.
He is intent on closing down the Team.
Hawk's kill was not sanctioned so Steiner wants him brought in.

Ah now, the other players.
Tyler Stewart, 38 year old model, glitzey, beautiful and broke.
Her agent destroyed her security.
Enter Amir al-Ahmad, wealthy, handsome play-boy. He is determined to marry Tyler.
Malcolm Truett, Amir's secretary gives Tyler the pass key to his room.
She catches a glimse of a sniper and knows she is in trouble.

It just keeps getting better - fast paced - murder, intrigue - deadly accuracey - one shot, one kill.
Two people on the run - Hawk calling in favors - brotherhood of the Team.
FANTASTIC STORY!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED --m - Definitely a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Story, June 28, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Bride's Protector (Men Of Mystery) (Harlequin Intrigue, No. 509) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed 'The Bride's Protector'- what a wonderful tale! I enjoy romance novels(my favorite type of books!), but this one was an extra special treat! I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I was hoping to have the story continue on, actually.
The basic plot is that on her hastily arranged wedding day, bride and former model Tyler Stewart has serious second, third, and fourth thoughts about marrying her sheikh playboy millionaire fiance. She finally decides that even though she's supposed to marry within the hour, she can't go through with it and must talk it out with him instead.
Rushing to his hotel suite to talk to him(he's supposed to be meeting up with his father who is attending the ceremony amid threats of assasination attempts), she walks in on a murder. The killers, having seen her are now after her, and her only hope is the strange man whose hotel room she 'borrows' to hide out.
Right from the start she knows that there is more to him that she can see and she never gets the whole story about him until almost the end of the book, but that doesn't stop her from trusting him and falling in love with the man she only comes to know as "Hawk".
Luccas Hawkins-'Hawk'- is in fact a government assassin who at the start of the story avenges the death of his colleague and boss. He's very good at his job and he's an incredibly dangerous and tortured man with a very bad past and no one in his life he cares about anymore except for the other members of the covert team he used to work with on operations. But while on the run with Tyler, he finds himself drawn to her and falling in love. She thinks of him as her white knight. He knows better and comes to hate the day when he'll have to tell her who he really is what he does.
Hawk is one of the most compelling heros I've ever read about(I loved him!) and Tyler is great heroine for him. She's a real woman with spirit and depth. I think Ms. Wilson developed her characters very well.
This started out as a trilogy(The Bride's Protector, The Stranger She Knew, and His Secret, Her Child) and I read them out of order because of what became available at the library. I loved all of them and am now reading the rest of the books in the lineup(Men Of Mystery/Phoenix Brotherhood), but this one is my favorite! A really great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best!, August 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bride's Protector (Men Of Mystery) (Harlequin Intrigue, No. 509) (Paperback)
Absolutely a page turner. Unfortunately, I will also judge other Harlequin Intrigue novels to Gayle Wilson's work. I could not put the book down and actually felt like I was there with Tyler and Hawk. Great story! I didn't feel like I was just reading sentences, but I could feel the story. I have read other Harlequin Intrigue novels and although they were good, Gayle Wilson's has been the best. I wish there had been more of these gentlemen to write about in her trilogy.

THE BRIDE'S PROTECTOR is a terrific romantic suspense novel -- it ranks right up there with the best in the business. A heroine on the run, a dangerous man, action, adventure and sizzling sex make up the best combination of romance and suspense I've read in a long time. Gayle Wilson is a marvel!

and intrigue. Hawk and Tyler's story grabbed me on page one and held tight right up until I turned the last page. I'm thrilled that Gayle's story doesn't end here, but continues next month with her newest MEN OF MYSTERY, The Stranger She Knew.

The writing in this book reminded me of how I would think of older-style romance writing. Over the top inner monologues, very dramatic emotions, stuff like that. I suppose it could be partly due to the fact that this book is, I think, 10+ years old. Or maybe it was just personal preference. To be honest, I couldn't even make myself finish the book. Hawk, the hero, was just too weird. He was almost robot-like, like his personality was programmed out of him when he was with the CIA. In any event, I cannot recommend this book.

I had to stop reading this book. Its portrayal of Middle Eastern people was so stereotypically prejudiced. Definitely dated and annoying.
