Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Sydney Spinelli, an uptight accountant from New Jersey, has never been in love. She doesn't believe in making impulsive decisions, so when her flighty sister, Julia, announces that she's marrying her boyfriend of only one month, Sydney rushes to Texas to stop her. However, as soon as she meets Alex, the charming best friend of Julia's fiancé, her plans begin to unravel and she finds herself unwillingly falling in love. The premise that a grown woman would go to such extremes to prevent a sister's wedding-Sydney even steals the engagement ring to prove it's fake-is almost irredeemably ridiculous, and the author's habit of inflicting exaggerated accents on her characters (Sydney's fathers asks, "You heah from dat useless sistah o' yours?") is also distracting. Its many flaws, though, don't spoil this lighthearted comedy completely. The snappy talk keeps the plot in constant motion, and Alex's struggle to deal with his mother's Alzheimer's adds some much needed emotional depth to this otherwise shallow story. Readers looking for an absorbing romance will be disappointed, but this breezy novel may satisfy those wanting something fun and mindless to read on the beach.

From Booklist

Julia is getting married to Roman Sonntag, a man she has known less than a month. So big sister Sydney, an accountant in New Jersey, immediately travels to Fredericksburg, Texas, to talk some sense into her; and Sydney's own romantic misadventures start when Roman's best friend, Alex, overhears Sydney at her most scathing. Determined to teach her a lesson, Alex drags Sydney through a barnyard in the Texas heat before introducing her to Roman, cool and elegant in a designer business suit at his very prosperous vineyard. An embezzlement, Alex's struggle with his mother's early-onset Alzheimer's, and Sydney's unwillingness to admit, even to herself, that she is more than a little jealous of Julia's beauty and newfound self-confidence add depth to this contemporary romantic comedy, the first in the Bridesmaid Chronicles, a series of four by various authors. More About the Author

Award winning author Karen Kendall has always been a creative spirit, fleeing into the fictional world at an early age, emerging only to obtain a Bachelors' degree in something even less practical: Art History. After completing graduate coursework for an MA and working for several small museums and a large commercial art gallery, she realized her dream of being an author, and has since published over twenty novels. She now resides both in South Florida and in her various story worlds. Her husband Don tolerates her imaginary friends -- as long as she socializes with real ones, too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Entertaining, January 30, 2006
By
Kelly S. "Book Lover" (Phantastic Philadelphia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Bridesmaid Chronicles: First Date (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading this book. It didn't take me long at all to finish it. It was pretty light and very fun! It's a story about a snap engagement that provokes the protective sister to come in and try to stop the wedding. Of course there are misunderstandings and scheming plans and personality conflicts. That only makes the book more fun entertaining to read. The main character did get on my nerves a little bit due to the fact that she is very controlling and extremely nosy and worst of all, self-loathing. Enter sexy hero. He convinces her that she is sexy and desirable and they fall in love and she stops hating herself. Everyone lives happily ever after... at least until the next in the series, First Kiss

5.0 out of 5 stars Take me to Texas, December 4, 2005
This review is from: The Bridesmaid Chronicles: First Date (Paperback)
Every time I read one of Karen Kendall's books, it is better than the last one! I would normally run like the wind from a series about bridesmaids (IMHO, the stuff of nightmares) but, since Karen wrote it, I gave it a chance--and LOVED it. So much, in fact, that I've already started on FIRST DANCE, another of the books in the series. In fact, I'm trying to figure out how to get Fredericksburg, Texas into my 2006 travel schedule. The womanizing Texas hunk meets Jersey-girl-with-an-attitude romance made me want to two-step with someone in a Stetson hat.

4.0 out of 5 stars A joy to read and filled with both laughter and sentiment., August 10, 2005
This review is from: The Bridesmaid Chronicles: First Date (Paperback)
Starting in June 2005 - you will be able to read 4 books in 4 months with a brand new series of romantic novels entitled The Bridesmaid Chronicles. It's a series all about weddings - starting with 3 books, each about a bridesmaid's love story, and leading up to a bride's big wedding day in the fourth book.

Karen Kendall has written the first book First Date in The Bridesmaid Chronicles . . . Jersey girl Sydney is determined to put a stop to the upcoming wedding of her little sister and her Texan boyfriend who she's dated only 1 month. There's one problem though . . . Sydney's heart gets distracted by the groom's sexy best friend Alex in the process. First Date is a joy to read and filled with both laughter and sentiment. Collect all 4 novels for yourself or give the entire set as a bridesmaid gift.

Additional novels in the collection will include: First Kiss by Kylie Adams, First Dance by Karen Kendall and First Love by Julie Kenner.
