Book Description

October 2002
Do you remember the first few times you played bridge? To get you started, a friend probably gave you a few helpful hints. There are many such general guidelines for bridge players -- some of them valuable, some not. But these are the Bridge Myths, not the Bridge Rules -- because they all have exceptions and none should be followed blindly. In reading this book you will get to see what it is about each guideline that makes it so useful; more importantly, you will also learn to recognise the times when you should ignore it.

More About the Author

David Bird is the author of 108 bridge books, recently overtaking the total of the late Terence Reese. He is best known for his humorous bridge fiction, involving the monks of the St Titus monastery headed by the pompous Abbot, Hugo Yorke-Smith. Bridge correspondent for the Mail on Sunday (UK) and the London Evening Standard, David contributes to many bridge magazines around the world and is a frequent commentator on international bridge events for Bridge Base Online. Married to Thelma, with two children and a four-year-old grandson, he has a great passion for travelling the world. In any country they visit, he and Thelma make sure that they take full advantage of the local food and drink. They are also keen snorkellers.

4.0 out of 5 stars debunks beginner rules, May 19, 2011

This review is from: 25 Bridge Myths Exposed (Paperback)
This is a nice series of books. This one is aimed toward play, and works at debunking a lot of the rules we learned as beginners:

second hand low
eight ever nine never
never give a ruff and sluff
win as cheaply as possible
etc.

The book doesn't suggest that these rules are bad, but rather that they are not solid gold. Sometimes second hand might do better playing high. Sometimes you want to finesse for the queen even though you have nine of the suit.

The book offers examples where the "myths" work and where they don't and considers what one might think about in analyzing and planning one's play. For this reason, the book can be a useful addition to one's bridge library.
